Ben Carson's remarks on foreign policy have repeatedly raised questions about his grasp of the subject, but never more seriously than in the past week, when he wrongly asserted that China had intervened militarily in Syria and then failed, on national television, to name the countries he would call on to form a coalition to fight the Islamic State.
Faced with increasing scrutiny about whether Mr. Carson - who leads in some Republican presidential polls - was capable of leading American foreign policy, two of his top advisers said in interviews with The New York Times that he had struggled to master the intricacies of the Middle East and national security and that intense tutoring was having little effect.
"Nobody has been able to sit down with him and have him get one iota of intelligent information about the Middle East," Duane R. Clarridge, a top adviser to Mr. Carson on terrorism and national security, said in an interview. He also said Mr. Carson needed weekly conference calls briefing him on foreign policy so "we can make him smart."

Not a Carson fan, but this is called Palinization.
The man is smart , but he is no where near good enough to be President. Running the HHS is the exact spot for him.
Weird indeed, but sure seems true.
The man is a dangerous idiot. Quite frankly, I’m shocked any Conservative supports him. I’m not even sure he could find a map much less any Country on it.
Carson makes good points and he makes bad points. He is wrong on amnesty and guns.
And they go to the NY Times to spill the beans. Hopefully, those are nice ex-advisors you get there Ben.
No it isn’t. This from his advisor.
Wait until it gets out that on Friday he thought the Terri Schiavo thing in Congress was “MUCH ADIEU ABOUT NOTHING”.
See how all those value voters for Carson VALUE that.
Carson implodes. Is it on purpose? I mean, YIKES!
Nope.
The attacks on Palin were unwarranted and inaccurate.
Carson is a Biden style gaffe factory.
He doesn’t even know enough to be aware of areas where he shouldn’t risk faking an answer.
Strike the tent.
Carson’s adviser must be a Bush or Rubio plant.
[ Carson makes good points and he makes bad points. He is wrong on amnesty and guns. ]
Carson will say something absolutely brilliant one day, but the next day he will say something face palmingly stupid.
Perhaps Mr. Clarridge is just frustrated and ready to give up.
Still a better grasp than Obama. That said GO TRUMP.
Yep. And that alone is enough to completely disqualify him.
Obama’s been at it for 7+ years and still hasn’t gotten it.
Carson needs to GTFO and enjoy his retirement.
My gut tells me that this is nothing but a money raising adventure. He is allowed to give his money to the party or to his favorite charity which would be his own charity.
Obama knows EXACTLY what he has been doing for the past 7 years. All of the chaos and evil is by design.
“No it isn’t. This from his advisor.”
That’s precisely why I called it Palinization. I’m referring to when her debate prep advisor leaked disparaging info about her. Why is it that these political ‘advisors’ seem to have more loyalty to the NYT than the candidates they are paid to advise?
BTW, many months ago I heard Carson on Mark Levine. This was before much was known about him, and I tended to ‘like’ him. But some of the things he stated in that interview, concerning foreign policy, shook my faith in him...and I never looked back. So I’m not an apologist for him. But the lack of loyalty displayed here is stunning.
This guy should not be running for President.
