Donald Trumpâs high standing in the polls is attributable entirely to the fact that heâs not a Washington insider, not part of the racket, and despite his wealth really might actually give a damn about the Little Guy. So why is he saying things like this?
Donald Trump on Wednesday defended government property seizures as a ânecessary thing,â even when it means involuntarily taking property from a private owner to transfer it to another business. Trump was speaking to reporters outside the capital statehouse moments before formally filing his candidacy for the February primary, and the Washington Examiner pressed him on his record of using eminent domain laws to expand his casino empire.
âProperty rights are a big issue in New Hampshire,â the Examiner noted. âIn Atlantic City you used eminent domain laws aggressively to expand your casino.â
Trump interjected by calling this a âstupid questionâ before launching into a defense of eminent domain. âI am all for private property rights,â Trump said. âThereâs nobody who wants property taken away less than I do, believe me. I would lose a lot of money if my property were taken away. But when youâre building a road, when youâre building a highway, when youâre building whatever it is youâre building from a municipal standpoint, you may need a corner of a piece of property.â As he said this, he pinched his fingers together to demonstrate the smallness of the property.
The abstract reasoning may be sound â although in the Supreme Courtâs disgraceful Kelo decision it certainly was not â but the optics are terrible. It smacks of Romneyism, a cluelessness about how ordinary people live their lives.
Are you one of those libs that canât figure out the difference between âlegalâ and âillegalâ? If so, you ought to take your crap over to DU.
As to Senator Cruzâs positions on issues, why are you willing to take for granted the validity of something you read in the staunchly and implacably anti-Cruz and pro Chamber of Commerce (read GOPe) Wall Street Journal, and discount the words of the man himself?
Or, for that matter, the staunchly anti-Cruz National Review.
You need to lean how to recognize a hit piece.
By the way, the Ponnuru statement that Cruz is “open to offering legal status to illegal immigrants” is a flat out lie. In fact as far as I know Cruz is the ONLY Republican candidate who has NOT taken such a position, and that includes your Donald Trump.
Sorry, I thought you were able to read and develop meaning from a sentence. This was from National Review and Ponnuru was quoting what the man (Cruz) said in contradistinction to what the Wall Street Journal was saying about Cruz. Is that good enough for you?
The Wall Street Journal was saying that Cruz was strict on immigration, which would help him out with conservatives.
Ponnuru was saying not so fast, he is liberal on immigration, based on what Cruz himself said.
Does that help?
âopen to offering legal status to illegal immigrantsâ is a flat out lie.
No, that is what Cruz was saying, at the time. He is too coy now to say that. However, their is an you tube video of him calling for a five-fold increase in H1-B visas. You can find that yourself.
Sorry to burst you bubble.
Oh, so that's the standard now. Trump can endorse an outrageous Supreme Court decision like Kelo (and he indeed did endorse the ruling - despite your prior inaccurate statement that did not), but its okay because it was a SCOTUS decision and not a decision Trump made directly, even though he supports it. So I guess you also are fine if he picks SCOTUS justices with the same philosophy that will be making rulings possibly for decades like Kelo? Is this also how you give him a pass for his support of Obama's stimulus (aka porkulus) - because he wasn't in Congress at the time to vote on it and didn't actually sign it into law? Are you seeing how absurd your attempts at making excuses are getting?
I am much more worried about illegal immigration. If we have open borders, nothing else will matter. We will be over as a country.
It's one of the most important issues but saying nothing else matters is absurd. We want our borders secured but we don't want to be oppressed ourselves within our own borders.
You did miss something - he is an outspoken supporter of the outrageous Kelo decision, and his comments on eminent domain are in keeping with that ruling. Eminent domain is supposed to be to acquire property for public use, but Trump supports taking it from a poorer owner to a wealthier one by force.
