Teacher's answer to Common Core math problem has parents steaming

A new trend in math at elementary schools around the country has parents pulling out their hair. Mainly because it is the opposite of how most of today's adults were taught to do simple multiplication in the first place.

According to a Common Core math worksheet that's gone viral, an elementary child today cannot just say, "5 x 3 = 15." Instead they have to change the multiplication problem to addition before solving the equation. However, if the child says, "5 + 5 + 5 = 15," they will still lose points because the problem must be written as it is stated. In this case, "five times three" is really stated as "five groups of three," and has to be written as such: "3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15."

This concept has left many parents shaking their heads and throwing their hands up in despair because they can't figure out what it is that their child is supposed to do. Why do you have to add instead of multiply, and why do you have to add the second number five times instead of the first number three times? The biggest question is: "Does it even matter?"

I saw that statistic yesterday, 27th in math is what they reported. Can anyone wonder why American children are 27th in the world smart in math? Dumbshit teachers, always been around. Thats why the two smartest people in my family both dropped out of high school, they were way over the heads of their teachers. One is a self taught C programmer and computer tech extraordinaire. The other who is an absolute wiz in math, at 28 is the owner of a very successful business and just bought a half a million dollar house!

No one will be able to do more advanced math....except Asians and S. Asians.

Americans will be digging rocks and pulling weeds. Or on welfare.

The US as we know it will be a museum.

“I’d like to know what grade this is”

Today ... Third grade if I am not mistaken.

Tomorrow, this will be an example of advanced 15th grade math. This lesson comes after a year of training in critical skills like estimation and approximation.

The poor kid missed the next question for the same reason (4 groups of six instead of 6 groups of 4).

Obviously understood the ridiculous concept, but stated it incorrectly.

A generation of us Math teachers fought "modern math",""""......

You must be the generation of teachers that taught my children. She was told to ignore what the parents tell them and do it their way.......

She listened to them and tried and went back to what I and her grandpa taught her. Grandpa only had a 3rd grade education, but was a whizz at math.

Daughter is now Head comptroller of a major company in our city, taking care of all of their multiple enterprises. lol.

Grandpa taught us the quick way: 27 plus 27 equals..... doing it his easy way add 30 & 30 minus 6...round the numbers up & minus off.

What ever happened to just memorizing the tables up to 12 like we all had to do

Memorization is anathema to modern "educators." They don't want to admit that they can be replaced with anyone who has the same patience necessary to train a puppy.

No. That was set theory bull crap. This Core Curriculum is a (government) program that will “dumb” down students. It is an insane way of doing Math. There must have been something good in the way we do it now as it gave us all we have today.Wait till they try to balance their checkbook with this crazy sht.

This math reminds me of when they did away with the teaching of phonics.

When I was a kid, I could sound out words. When I did, I could match the word with my last instance of hearing it used around the house. I was able to self teach a new word

This was a building block. They took it away.

They’ve done the same thing in math.

This can’t be unintentional.

It’s also why they don’t teach our history any longer.

Building blocks, they’re kicking them out thoroughly as they can.

Think of the future of engineering...this math is the foundation for the future airplane engineers! I guess I should stop flying in about 15 years!
