Donald Trump: "I don't understand Iowa"
CBS News ^ | 10/25/2015 | REENA FLORES

As Ben Carson catches up to Donald Trump in Iowa in recent polls of the early contest state, Trump remains baffled at his Republican competitor's success.

"I don't understand Iowa because frankly, I just left and we had tremendous crowds and tremendous enthusiasm," Trump told CBS' "Face the Nation" early Sunday. "Frankly, even to be tied, I'm a little surprised."

He added that he was "very honored" to be lead in other key early-voting states like New Hampshire and South Carolina. But when it comes to Iowa, where he and Carson both lead the GOP field at 27 percent in a new CBS poll, he remains "surprised."

"I think that Iowa, you know, it has that same incredible feeling. We had a rally there the other day and it was so intense and there was so much love in the room," Trump continued. "So I'm actually surprised, very surprised that I'm even tied in Iowa."

Trump attributes Carson's rise in Iowa to the super PAC operations backing Ben Carson in the state, which he attacked as "running Iowa for him."

The Iowa, she is a strange duck. Land of corn and home of John Deere, the economic base is an odd mixture of industrial and agricultural. The farmers voted Republican, their sons who went to work for agricultural machine manufacturers International Harvester and Oliver, joined the UAW and voted Democrat. The state has been varying shades of purple since about the time shortly after the Civil War, perhaps, never quite as radical as the Progressives of Minnesota and Wisconsin, but never as conservative as Kansas. A large admixture of Scandinavian immigrants, more liberal in their outlook than the dour Germans who had arrived first, only added to the texture of purple coloration, and the state is filled with “grumpy old men”.

And none of them has any concept of what life in a “big city” would be like. Almost nobody is more than a generation or so away from the farm, and the older generation grew up going to country schools and making a trip into town maybe once or twice a month.

When Donald says he’s not a politician - he’s telling the truth... I don’t think he’s run one ad either...

You’ve got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons.

I sincerely hope you forgot the sarcasm tag for that one.

I agree. Trump has that guy Loudner running his campaign in Iowa and he’s supposed to be the best.

This may be why the Donald doesn't understand Iowa:

I've seen reports Carson is tight with the ethanol industry.

Thank God.

One down and One Hillary to go...

I genuinely hope we never ever see Hillary in a public role again. I think Trump will skewer her.

Trump's only weakness with Hillary might be the "woman" thing that Fiorina briefly capitalized on. I'm sure Hillary and the Clinton machine didn't miss that. Trump needs to be very clear that if a woman climbs into the ring with a man, she doesn't get special privileges and pull the "woman" card whenever she wants. If she's going to climb into he ring with the men, then take your hits like a man, lady.

It seems to me that, generally speaking, that area of the country, not just Iowa but other surrounding states as well, either elect democrats in elections or really screwball republicans like john boner and paul ryan and john kasich.

is broken, and that’s a big leap for a lot of folks. Carson is the safe alternative.

How right you are. For decent people, it is so difficult to wrap your head around the concept that a two party oligarchy and their winged monkey media own this place and have goals that differ greatly from those of the Constitution and the People. But once you get it, you see that Dem and Rep are just different colored jerseys. Made in the same corrupt factory.

I didn’t get it yet in 2012. Now I can’t NOT see it in everything that happens.
