He has given up his C.S.I. reruns, consuming campaign coverage on Fox News intently but fretfully when he is perched in front of the television in his Houston home.
He reads three print newspapers daily, dials into briefings given by advisers to his son Jebs presidential campaign and stays up late to watch prime-time debates after sitting through the so-called undercard, too.
Former President George Bush, 91 and frail, is straining to understand an election season that has, for his son and the Republican Party, lurched sharply and stunningly off script. And he is often bewildered by what he sees.

More is at stake in this race than Jeb Bushs political career, friends of the family say. The Bush name has been prominent in national politics for three decades, and a rejection of the younger son by the electorate, especially in the primary, could be deeply wounding to a family proud of its role in American history.

Proud of it’s American role?!?!??!
Did I miss part of those 12 years?
41, Read my lips this time, No More Bush’s.
Read my lips: No new Bushes.
the Bush family saw this coming . Barbara told him not to run , that America had had enough Bushs for now . Jeb didn’t listen . He allowed himself to be convinced that with funding he would overcome all odds and be a shue in for the nomination . He gambled , they gambled . They have lost .
Now , please take your ‘kinder , gentler, points of light and religion of peace ‘ BS and quietly consign yourself to U.S history . America does not want or need a Bush the Third , or Bush the turd ...whichever
Dang. You beat me to it. lol...
I happen to like what Trump is saying -- but even if you don't like, or trust, Trump the situation ought to be pretty clear. Professional politicians, political dynasties, the insiders who manipulate politics to serve their own ends -- people are tired of that stuff.
Why is this hard for the Bushes to see? I'm sure they don't like it. I'm sure they think people are making a mistake. But that doesn't change the simplicity of it: The Bush Dynasty has been on top for 63 years, and those years have mostly seen decline in this country. The people want change. The people want to reject anything that smells like insider politics. Trump is simply different, and people find that appealing. The Bushes claim that they don't "get it". They are either stupid or disingenuous.
Spot on.
All I remember from him is the words he spoke at the UN, a “new world order” that did it for me
I completely agree.
The Bushes were on top for quite a while. During that time, America basically built up China.
America needs badly, to build up our own country once again.
George Bush was one of the lamest and most tone-deaf politicians I've ever seen in the public eye. I get a sense that "bewildered" has been a pretty consistent theme in his adult life.
Read my lips.
no JEB
Note to the Bushs; please GTFOH!
That was wake up time for me.
Says it all, doesn’t it?
Sununu: I have no feeling for the electorate anymore.
It is not responding the way it used to. Their priorities are so different that if I tried to analyze it Id be making it up.
This is the 3rd Bush that has been rejected in some major way. Maybe they should learn from this.
They can’t believe we “Tea Party, Conservatives, right wing nuts out here”, actually have enough sense to have a dissenting opinion and take them out. They “didn’t see this one coming”.
After obama was elected, Mom Bush said for us to accept it and get over it. GW let us all hang out to dry for the past 7+ years. That’s long enough to learn a lesson on how much the Bushes care. Their dynasty and the GOP dynasty are on the way out. “Accept it and get over it.”
“The [Bush] family has long believed Mr. Perots third-party candidacy helped Bill Clinton capture the White House from Mr. Bush in 1992”
Read my lips: It was the tax hike that cost Bush his presidency, not Perot.
“After Obama was elected, Mom Bush said for us to accept it and get over it. GW let us all hang out to dry for the past 7+ years”
After George W. came out of his long seclusion, who is a the first person he criticizes? Ted Cruz.
