An Orthodox Jewish woman is suing the Lucille Roberts health-club chain for allegedly pitching a holy fit when she insisted on wearing a skirt during her workouts in Brooklyn. Yosefa Jalal, of Crown Heights, claims in court papers to be filed Friday that she was repeatedly harassed, threatened with arrest and ultimately had her membership revoked for following religious dictates regarding female modesty.

Why do Orthodox Jewish women have to go to a gym in the first place?
Don’t they get enough exercise, chasing after four or five little ones; going to market (no car—walking about 2 miles while shopping); standing on feet fixing Kosher meals and Sabbath meals; cleaning house, etc. etc. etc.
And then after sundown...the guy in the bed.
No rest for the weary.

They probably did. “Clothing appropriate to the activity” is a pretty standard gym membership clause. And skirts that could get caught in machines are not appropriate to the activity.

I’m embarrassed by some of the comments on this thread. Antipathy against Orthodox Jews runs deep among some. It’s as if they have no clue who Jesus and his mother Mary really were.
So what’s the problem again?
Seems to me there’s a perfectly reasonable solution to the problem of accidental exposure in skirts (while working out): one could just have the yoga pants or sweat pants or shorts underneath the skirt. I realize some guys might get a jolly just seeing an upturned skirt but what’s the big deal if the garment that’s exposed is something that’s normally seen anyway?
Besides this is apparently an all women’s club. So who really would care (except for some lesbians I guess maybe).
I tend to agree with the sentiment that there’s more to this story than meets the eye. No pun intended.
