‘Truth’: Movie Reignites Heated Debate Over ‘60 Minutes II’ Scandal
Variety ^ | October 6, 2015 | By Cynthia Littleton

“Truth” is revisiting a painful chapter for CBS News. The upcoming movie, starring Cate Blanchett as producer Mary Mapes and Robert Redford as Dan Rather, is an unwelcome reminder of past mistakes for several people who lived through the saga of the 2004 “60 Minutes II” report on President George W. Bush’s time in the Texas Air National Guard.

Some who are depicted in the controversial film, which is based on Mapes’ 2005 book “Truth and Duty: The Press, the President and the Privilege of Power,” are critical of the conclusions drawn by the veteran investigative journalist.

They were hopeful that the picture, which debuts in theaters on Oct. 16, would come and go quickly in limited release. But Blanchett is generating Oscar buzz as a best actress contender for her tour de force performance as the hard-charging producer swept up in a firestorm of partisan politics and media scrutiny of her work.

“It’s astounding how little truth there is in ‘Truth,’” a CBS spokesman said in response to Variety’s inquiry. “There are, in fact, too many distortions, evasions and baseless conspiracy theories to enumerate them all. The film tries to turn gross errors of journalism and judgment into acts of heroism and martyrdom. That’s a disservice not just to the public but to journalists across the world who go out every day and do everything within their power, sometimes at great risk to themselves, to get the story right.”

CBS’ ire and the response from the “Truth” filmmakers and distributor Sony Pictures Classics crystallizes the central debate about the incident that has been re-ignited by the film. Was the problem behind the “60 Minutes II” report an issue of corporate interference with the pursuit of a sensitive story? Or was it journalistic mistakes that compromised the reputation. . .

The Left never gives up, they never forgive and they never forget. Even when they lose a battle they’ll attempt to rewrite the history of it and turn the public’s perception 180 degrees.

That can never be said enough. The left has NO commitment to the truth and deliberately manufactures lies. So here we are, more than 60 years after the trial, with NYC honoring the Rosenbergs. And at the close end of the timeline, we are seeing in real time the manufacturing of a racially inflammatory mythology around Trayvon Martin and the Gentle Giant. It never ends.

Back in the day the ratherbiased.com website did a great job of exposing this liar.

The Wayback Machine appeears to be the only way to get to those pages now...

Absolutely correct.

Scott Johnson and John Hinderaker have an excellent piece in The Weekly Standard on this: http://www.weeklystandard.com/articles/rather-shameful_1039561.html?nopager=1

They allowed me a guest post on PowerLine in which I discuss similar and related points. http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2015/10/harry-macdougald-truth-and-other-lies-2.php

But it is even worse than that:

But those “memos” were NOT even memo’s (they were re-typed FITREP’s based on verbal interviews from a democrat supporter, NOT on the actual FITREP’s actually submitted and recorded at the time!) So, as forgeries, the democrat national press corpse treated them as FACT, and not even “alleged charges by a political insider”

But the ACTUAL CHARGES by ACTUAL Kerry shipmates about actual real-time incidents and exaggerations were insulted and demeaned and “defined” as lies and political insults imediately and forever by Oboal’s press corpse.

Thanks for the links. Two very good pieces. Have they been excerpted on FR? If not, do you want either or both to be?

(Nice to see you can still [occasionally] be seen in these parts.)

Thanks, that’s it. I couldn’t remember that so I did a search on ‘TigersEye Dan Rather’ and found one of my older posts so I could look at the source code.

[(1) coordination with the DNC and the Kerry campaign, which was up with coordinated advertising immediately after the CBS hit piece aired;]

As I remember it was established in the corporate investigation that Mapes went directly to the Kerry campaign with copies of the documents and an offer to coordinate efforts. Once Kerry’s people examined the documents closely they declined to use them as a campaign tool but encouraged Mapes and Rather to air their program. Rather’s and Mapes’ attempt to join forces with a political campaign was in itself such a betrayal of professional standards it warranted their firing.

Thanks. As I recall the events, the Kerry campaign and/or the DNC was up immediately after the broadcast with ads that seemed perfectly coordinated with the CBS hit piece. Even if the Democrats declined to use the Mapes material directly, they would seem to have been aware of the content of the story and the timing of the broadcast.

Hey, Jim:

There seems to be at least one scene from the film taking place in Atlanta, according to the full cast list at imdb.com.

That being said, the film is getting perhaps a limited opening Friday.

If anyone out there could look at the film and let us know if things are portrayed accurately, it would be appreciated.

Otherwise, Jim, do you think you could make a statement making people aware of the deliberate oversight for dissemination across various platforms, including the aforementioned imdb.com?

Just my two cents.
