[(1) coordination with the DNC and the Kerry campaign, which was up with coordinated advertising immediately after the CBS hit piece aired;]
As I remember it was established in the corporate investigation that Mapes went directly to the Kerry campaign with copies of the documents and an offer to coordinate efforts. Once Kerry’s people examined the documents closely they declined to use them as a campaign tool but encouraged Mapes and Rather to air their program. Rather’s and Mapes’ attempt to join forces with a political campaign was in itself such a betrayal of professional standards it warranted their firing.
Thanks. As I recall the events, the Kerry campaign and/or the DNC was up immediately after the broadcast with ads that seemed perfectly coordinated with the CBS hit piece. Even if the Democrats declined to use the Mapes material directly, they would seem to have been aware of the content of the story and the timing of the broadcast.
