Ben Carson insisted Sunday that for a Muslim to become president of the United States, "you have to reject the tenets of Islam."
"Yes, you have to," the retired neurosurgeon and Republican presidential candidate said Sunday in an interview with CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union."
His latest criticism of Islam came the week after he'd said he "would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation."
"I would have problems with somebody who embraced all the doctrines associated with Islam," Carson said. "If they are not willing to reject sharia and all the portions of it that are talked about in the Quran -- if they are not willing to reject that, and subject that to American values and the Constitution, then of course, I would."
He argued, though, that the controversy surrounding his comments last week has been overblown.
"Is it possible that maybe the media thinks it's a bigger deal than the American people do?" Carson said. "Because American people, the majority of them, agree and they understand exactly what I am saying."

He would be a great ambassador at large to the young people of America...particular to young Black men who are incredibly at risk of falling into the thug life.
He has seemed pretty wishy-washy on a lot of important things.
Ping.
No political correctness, just facts and logic.
Go Ben and God bless you.
It unnerves folks how soft-spoken the Doc is. MSM can’t process the Doc’s demeanor.
Tapper was just not getting it. He was dumbfounded by Carson's very precise logic.
I am hoping that the right candidate can pull all of these important issues together and make the case for his candidacy, and that it will make sense to the majority of the voters.
Particularly when his demeanor is backed up by his incredibly sharp mind.
It is truly something to behold.
“It unnerves folks how soft-spoken the Doc is. MSM cant process the Docs demeanor.”
The sooner they assign the term “unflappable” the sooner they’ll process it. Ben’s soft-spokenness is the product of an underlying, steely resolve.
This is a smart, thoughtful, decent man. Maybe he gets the VP slot. Fine by me.
Really....He went to Ferguson and said he never would have shot the 300 lb thug....Cops must have loved that.
Ping. Watch the video when you get a chance. It is powerful.
Gentle Ben has many of those looking for a “bomb thrower” greatly baffled.
Gentle Ben does not lob bombs. He pulls the pin on a hand grenade and rolls it into the room....
I like that Carson is not backing down about this topic. We better face the facts before we end up like France or worse, today’s Germany, overrun with and (already!) terrorized by fake ‘refugees’.
Tapper really isn’t that bright, is he.
If he only talked to the people of Ferguson and not the police, he was lied to about the behavior of the gentle giant.
If he knew the truth, he would have been required to shoot...or he would be dead.
LOL! At the end, someone says, off-camera, “This interview is over.” Was it Jake’s producer who said that?
