Republicans increasingly believe that Donald Trump is the presidential contender who stands the best chance of winning back control of the White House in next year's election, a new poll has found.
The figures come as Republican presidential hopefuls are said to be about to launch a multi-pronged attack against Mr Trump at tonight's debate in an increasingly desperate bid to staunch his apparently inexorable rise.
More than one third 39 per cent - of Republican primary and caucus voters now view Mr Trump as the candidate with the best chance of winning the 2016 presidential election, according to the New York Times and CBS survey.
The figure is a 13-point increase in Mr Trumps rating since August, indicating that conservative voters, who initially reveled in the entertainment value of the business moguls loud mouth abrasive style, are also now viewing him as a serious candidate.
Most of the presidential nominees initially tiptoed around Mr Trump, aware of the billionaires stellar approval rating among conservative voters who are disillusioned with Washington. Those that did try to attack him saw their popularity decline.
But as election season gears up, and predictions that Mr Trump is an anomaly that would eventually self-destruct fail to come to fruition, his Republican rivals are taking action.

Trump could have a bigger effect for down-ticket repubs, than Obama did for Dems.
Every schmuck that has ever heard his name will come out to vote for him, ESPECIALLY if Hillary is the nominee.
Oh, oh. Ruth had better keep a sharp eye out over her shoulder. This story going against the wishes of the GOPe.
Yeah, the potential of a Trump winning exceeds everyone by far.
Of course. Everyone had a shot, but he stepped up to that plate and took incoming from all sides. And then he doubled down.
Tell that to Rinse Peenuts.
Like a powerful icebreaker ship plowing through sea ice, the Trump Juggernaut keeps forging forward, breaking into areas not subject to navigation for some time.
Nice guys finish last. Winning may not be everything, it is the only thing. Losing isn’t anything.
Leo Durocher, Vince Lombardi, Charlie Brown, where are you?
Is there just no one in the GOPe who understands what a massive defeat for the Left and victory for the GOP and Trump win would be? PC police humiliated and returned to their ivory towers. Massive demographic shifts towards Democrat constituencies stopped and reversed. Working and middle class Americans of all colors flocking to the GOP. Are their heads buried so far up their behinds that they can’t even imagine this?
I don’t particularly care for Donald Trump. I don’t have anything against him, it’s just that he is not a true conservative like say on Ted Cruz.
While Trump may not be a true conservative he understands things that are tearing our country apart that our conservative Congress is doing nothing about currently, namely illegal immigration, namely Islamic Jihad.
Why in the world our elected representatives don’t understand what our thoughts and feelings on these subjects is beyond me.
I have nothing against Ben Carson but he doesn’t understand the “illegal” part of illegal immigration. He feels sorry for the lawbreakers who have invaded our country and wants to find a way to make them legal.
It may sound like I have something against immigration, I don’t. We have laws in place that say who can legally immigrate into the United States. We encourage people to come to this country who have special skills, who have money, or anything that can help the stability and growth of this country. Instead our current administration allows people who are trying to destroy our country and they are doing a pretty good job of it.
So, no, I’m not particularly enthralled about Donald Trump but you better believe I will vote for him in a heartbeat if that’s what I had to choose from. In the primary I will vote for Ted Cruz and the general I will vote for the Republican nominee unless it’s a RINO. I sure hope I get to vote.
If they were to poll all voters, the numbers would be even higher. Unlike the knucklehead who reported the other day that he didn’t know anyone who supports Trump, I know plenty who do. (I am not even a Trump supporter. I like Cruz.)
Several of my husband’s libtard friends, who aren’t even registered to vote, support Trump and intend to vote for him. And several of his so-called conservative friends, also not regular voters, are jazzed about Trump.
What’s happening is incredible. Trump represents multiple ideas to multiple types of people.
No kidding. None of the others have the guts to even utter the words “illegal immigrants” for fear of being ridiculed my the MSM.
I will add that all of the aforementioned libtards love, love, love the Big Dawg and do not like Hillary one bit.
Trump could have a bigger effect for down-ticket repubs, than Obama did for Dems.

I hear democrats at my church talking up Trump. I really believe that with Trump as the republican nominee, many rats will desert the sinking democrat ship and actually vote for Trump in the general election.
It happened with Reagan.
The GOP would rather lose graciously than fight.
Pray America is waking
I agree. And this is why both main sects of the Uniparty are fighting DT tooth and nail and won’t let up until something really bad happens.
And 60% think he’s not.
Once a plurality believe him the most electable in the General, it ascertains his nomination.
If that is really true then what does that say about the quality of the people we're electing as Republicans to the House, the Senate, and the governorships?
