The possibility of a Donald Trump nomination for the GOP is looking stronger by the day. Barring a completely unforeseen event, he is going to be the likely nominee. He is currently leading in every single state primary poll save two, WI (Walker) and OH (Kasich). Both of these are weeks old, and in both cases you have incumbent favorite son governors. But recent polling from AL, AZ, CA, FL, GA, IA, ID, MO, NC, NV, NH, OR, SC, TX---plus doubtless a couple I've missed---have Trump in the lead. In some cases, the lead is 20 or even 30 points.
As John Notle points out today in Breitbart, Trump is already positioning for the general election, where in two polls he is either slightly leading or dead even with Hillary. Whether it's Cankles or the old, tired socialist Bernie Sanders, my bet is that Trump would win a general election by a very large margin. Very large.
And that's where the trouble begins.
And not for the reasons some of the drive-bys, especially the "conservative media" and the amen corner at National Review Online, would have you believe.
I pray I'm wrong on this.
I take Trump at his word that he will make a dedicated effort to fixt things. I take him at his word that building the wall would be job one. But barring a virtual revolution at the House and Senate level that accompanies a Trump presidency, I fear what you will see is an angry and wounded GOPe in Congress "crossing the aisle" with the Democrats to stop Trump from achieving anything. At that point, would a big-government Trump engage in executive orders? And would Congress then, and only then, find a spine to "shut down the government?" I fully believe that faced with their extinction as a class, the GOPe, its donors, and its mouthpices in the media will destroy the nation rather than allow it to be reformed.
He cannot (and should not) expect support from the RNC that he helped burn down, nor should he think that governors whom he just humiliated in primaries will link arms to make his administration a success. Maybe one or two would, most wouldn't.
In short, the biggest danger to America if Trump is elected is going to be the scorned and vengeful GOPe.
There are going to be only two things that can or will be effective in such a scenario: 1) the GOP base and Tea Party would have to bring such pressure on its candidates DURING the election cycle that they dare not cross them, or 2) the base throws enough out in the primaries that a rump conservative House/Senate caucus emerges, led by Lee, Cotton, Jim Jordan, Dave Brat, and whomever else is not in a Trump administration. (This is where, tactically, a Senator Cruz might be more important than an Attorney General Cruz, or a Senator Sessions better than Sessions in a cabinet level position.
But the real potential agent of destruction here is not Donald J. Trump but the death throes of the Whiggish Republican Party as something new, not yet to make an appearance, takes its place.
Well, you know what they say about a woman scorned.
They would not destroy the country like the Democrats would. The reason is because they have bonds. That is one thing the Democrats have a hold on them they threaten the investment and business climate. This time we threaten the investment and business climate. Either they go along or else.
One thing: Trump would not be shy about naming names and asking Americans for help.
We could have a Republican riot with a Presidential blessing!
Yes, I agree, he would be able to go over the heads of the media.
Trump is a master negotiator plus he knows they’re all for sale. If they can be bought one way, they can bought the other way, too. And he knows that as well as anyone.
Thought of same thing this morning. So let us put out the word to get rid of the problem legislators in House and Senate.
Electing a new President is just the beginning required in the GOP . Other Rino republicans must be sent packing also . Trump is just the earliest shot fired across the RNC bow . We must continue to replace these RINOs with conservative legislators .
The GOP e revenge in the House ans Senate will last only as long as their terms expire and they are replaced.
Seeing that eventuality many will come around to a new way of considering President Trump.
You know whose idea that was, right? Alexander Hamilton: “We must make it in the interest of the monied men to support the government.”
If it takes Trump to destroy the Republican party then i am all for....
The sooner the ashes of the GOP get mixed into the dirt the sooner a new tree of liberty can be planted.
FWIW, Kasich isn't all that popular with grassroots Republicans. He has refused to stand up for anything conservative, unless lots of profits for corporate paymasters is conservative. The main reason he won gov last election is that the Democratic candidate was laughably bad and unvetted.
The GOP will be easily replaced. The Boehner-McConnell old guard will fall with a puff of wind.
Trump is totally underestimated. Let Trump be Trump. The rest falls into place.
“scorned and vengeful GOP...” So Trump needs to start putting out coattails to candidates who will support him. He has the potential of neutering the GOP.
I don’t see a downside. If the congresspubs went against him they would be facing pitchforks and certainly be tossed out in the midterm elections...
Trump will do to America was Schwarzenegger did to California.
They would have two years.
Then the Rinos and Dem traitors will be voted out.
Trump’s support is VERY broad.
Big Money, Big Labor, working poor, ethnic minorities, married women, millenials, . . . choose any group.
I agree the GOPe is dangerous, but they will be WIPED out if Trump policies are blocked out of political malfeasance.
Once cleansed, the Republican Party will be returned to the Republic, where it rightly belongs.
Respectfully, but this is nonsense. If Trump wins the Presidency, the GOP will initially be behind him because he won and he’s ours. While I won’t vote for Trump in the primary, I’d vote for ANY Republican in ANY race over ANY Dem.
Trump will lose the GOP, and the rest of us, because he is no conservative and has no core conservative values. We have no idea what a Trump Presidency will look like or what he will do. We are buying a pig in a poke.
Trump is fun to watch, but I don’t want my President to be a clown.
LS, no matter what they say, the party of the president always climbs on board his agenda. Look at the Left. How many times did they abandon Obama on terrible policy?
They’ll belch about it at most. At the end of the day, they’ll come around. They did it for Reagan. They’ll do it for Trump.
Let’s take one issue. Immigration. We know what the GOPe wants. Do you honestly think they would oppose Trump’s plan.
He would be on the television in an hour, and the public would blister Congress over it. In two years every guy who opposed Trump would be looking for new work.
This guy will get things done. He won’t take no for an answer, and the GOPe knows it.
They also know that if they oppose him, their blockers will be out across the board.
The GOPe’s only game plan if Trump gets elected, is to ride it out. Let him do whatever he wants to do unopposed. If they oppose, everything dear to them will be destroyed.
They would have zero people left in Congress that agree with today’s GOPe in six years.
Crossing a populist that can communicate with the right ideas, NOT a brilliant idea.
