Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal hit Donald Trump on the front-running presidential candidate's response to the ongoing debate about the jailing of the Kentucky clerk who refused marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Trump had discussed the punishment Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis faced for disobeying the law on MSNBC.
"I hate to see her put in jail," Trump told MSNBC. "[But] the Supreme Court has ruled. That's the law of the land."
Sensing an opportunity on the campaign trail, Jindal rebuked The Donald in a series of tweets, exclaiming, "You can't make America great again by throwing Christians in jail."
"I understand asking forgiveness from God and respecting communion is a personal decision," the governor tweeted. "But even really rich New Yorkers should oppose jailing Christians for their religious beliefs."
Jindal followed up his tweets with a fundraising pitch in an email titled, "Trump turns his back on Christians."
"Religious liberty is one of the founding principles of our nation," Jindal wrote. "I will never abandon my commitment to protect our freedom so that I can get praise from the liberal media or suck up to Donald Trump."
Trump receives the support of more than 27 percent of GOP voters surveyed, according to RealClearPolitics' average of national polls. Jindal receives 0.2 percent support in the same average.
Jindal has often refrained from talking about Trump on the campaign trail. Instead, he has repeatedly sought to challenge Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker about the best way to repeal and replace Obamacare.
When the Washington Examiner asked Jindal earlier this summer about Trump's laudatory comments about single payer healthcare, Jindal opted for an answer about what differentiated him from Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. With the next Republican presidential debate fewer than two weeks away, Jindal is looking for every opportunity to increase his visibility.
I LOVE Bobby Jindal!!! I wish he would move up in the polls, but you sure have a point.....BLAME THE JUDGE and the SUPREME COURT!!!
Do you ever disagree with Trump?
If Trump told you to worship the Devil would you?
When will the cult see the light?
As soon as Trump wants me to put the I worship the Devil bumper sticker on, I’m endorsing Hillary!
***This law was passed while Congress was in session.***
To which law are you referring?
I suppose while you were preparing your glib and flippant response to my comment that we’re a nation of laws, you didn’t notice the rest of my comment where I said I support her decision and we need to work to change the court’s ruling, similar to how other wrong SCOTUS rulings have been changed in our history.
He appears to have missed the facts of this issues ...thus far..
perhaps his veiwpoint,.. will..... like most of his other veiwpoints, “evolve” as he determines that his statements regarding same are affecting his CAMPAIGN dealings?
The majority of Germans recognized Hitler as evil and dangerous but they kept their heads down and figured over time everything would work out and the evil would go away. It didn't and Germany paid a terrible price.
This war on Christians, our Constitution and our liberties is not going to go away either unless we stand up to it. Sadly too many are unwilling to call evil evil. To many are willing to except judicial tyranny saying "oh well it's the law of the land, we need to move on."
On a Practical Level....He supports the apparatus that put here in prison
that Apparatus consists of Non Legal Force.
He can say anything else he may desire but when he stated that the LAW says she has to act in the manner those YIELDING that FORCE demand...hes supporting her arrest and incarceration.
It is the law according to SCOTUS regardless of how we feel about it. You can bet your last dollar it will continue to be enforced to the limit of the fedgov’s ability. Ray Charles could see that situations like this would happen once that ruling came down. Congress had time after the ruling and before their recess to do something to protect people from this and they chose not to. I don’t expect much from them. I do expect that more people will be jailed over situations like this before it gets straightened out, if it ever does. BTW, if you are paying your taxes you are also supporting the apparatus that jailed her, just sayin’.
[[So Trump actually thinks that whatever five a-holes on the Supreme Court say magically becomes The Law of the Land?]]
As do carley, jeb, linsay as well- These 4 think the supreme in supreme court makes them higher than God and higher than actual established law- Laws are passed IN CONGRESS- a president can’t just declare something a law based on a SC RULING-
Hopefully trump will see the error of his statement belief- but I’m not holding my breath- He would be the most vocal and out front about it IF he did change his mind o n the issue
[[Trump is siding with rouge court that issued an unConstitutional and immoral ruling,]]
Yep- and the HC law was ‘ruled on by the supreme court as well’ so the Trump conciders that the ‘law of the land’ now and actually won’t work to repeal it? It’s funny the battles he picks and chooses-
Trump will be damaged IF he continues with his ‘it’s the law of the land’ nonsense because Christians will see it as him supporting persecution of Christians, and Huckabee and others will go after him on this, and rightfully so
[[Rich Santorum “The Supreme Court acted unconstitutionally .... Kim Davis was heroic and she has suffered the consequences. Putting her in jail is ridiculous.” ]]
No Rick- putting her in jail isn’t ‘ridiculous’, it’s ILLEGAL- The judge ILLEGALLY ordered her to violate her religious belief, and when she refused, He put her in jail.
Our constitution PROTECTS our right to religious beleifs- it doesn’t JAIL us for them!
I am closing in on 90 years of being born on US soil. I have known and lived through a huge economic depression. I have served in WWII overseas. I have had the benefits, including education from a world renowned university, Neither does rubbing that a great nation can give to persons such as myself. However, I still get angry when I have to live by what a bunch of government lackeys including judges all the way to supreme and especially a two legged mightier than thou kind of person making that my conscious feelings do not matter or have no substance. Neither does rubbing whatever it is on my head a political lotion that such people use make me feel good.
[[No, Trump is siding with the law. I know the current President doesnt think so, but we still are a nation of laws. And SCOTUS gets to decide whats Constitutional and whats not.]]
I must have missed where congress voted for it?
The reason we have three branches of government is to PREVENT rogue presidents from simply declaring something a law. The supreme court can only RULE on an issue- they can’t declare something a law-
“....If there is a law, judges can certainly enforce it, but judges cannot create a law and seek to enforce it.” There is broad separation of powers under the Constitution, and hence one organ of the State should not encroach into the domain of another organ. The judiciary should not therefore seek to perform legislative or executive functions vide Common Cause vs. Union of India (2008) 5 SCC 511.”
http://legalperspectives.blogspot.com/2009/12/can-supreme-court-make-laws-matter.html
not even the president has the power to create laws himself- He can propose bills to congress, but he can’t just willy nilly create law himself- He can do executive orders, however he can issue executive orders, but he did not do that in this issue- He simply declared the SC RULING law, and set about to enforce it without approval by congress- as far as I know, congress never voted o nthe issue either-
That’s not what I’m saying at all. I’m sorry for you that you interpret it that way. She’s not being jailed because she is Christian, she’s being jailed because she is defying an order to do her job. One that she was elected to do. She has the Constitutional right to conscientiously object to the provisions, and she did, and therefore she is held in contempt and jailed. I’m not saying do nothing, move along, I’m saying that besides prayer, we need to work hard at letting the politicians and SCOTUS know this is unacceptable and work to bring the case back before the court for review. SCOTUS certainly is not perfect, nor are politicians, nor are we. However we have a framework to work under and part of that framework allows for change in elected officials, impeachment of judges and re-review of decisions. Dred Scott was the law of the land for almost 60 yrs. other equally as bad decisions were laws until rescinded through court action or Constitutional amendment. That’s our system. Whats your solution?
OK, I agree but I also want to yell loudly in the street so the DC trash knows they really screwed up this time. And a few Judges better get impeached too.
There is no law in Kentucky compelling the license. The clerks asked the Governor and legislature to act on this months ago. They could have acted and accommodated or simply got out of the marriage business. They did not act. If anybody should be in jail it should be the Governor for he is one contemptible sob.
I had no problem with his response. Even if he succeeds in becoming POTUS, he can't reverse a SCOTUS Decision and neither can we.
He can appoint Conservative Originalist Jurists, but that would take Years unless there is a mass Die Off on the Court.
My guy Cruz was more forceful in his opinion, but it changes nothing. The FR Bubble gets bigger and bigger while Reality remains unchanged.
I think the whole thing is awful and I understand the Clerk's position, but my opinion doesn't change anything.
The situation will be resolved one way or another without any input from me, you or anyone else here on FR.
As an aside, I watched The Tonight Show last Night and Jimmy Fallon commented that the Clerk had been jailed for not giving out Marriage Licenses to Gay Couples. The Audience erupted in Applause. That is the attitude we are facing. We are just a small segment of Society who seem to enjoy fighting amongst ourselves, sorry.
So, who is your Candidate? So far, I'm a Cruz guy but unless he gains a whole bunch of traction, he may well end up being Trump's V.P. choice. The rest of the field do nothing for me. Maybe a couple of Cabinet Secretary's there.
I am right with you and I’m hoping this will move the pendulum back.
