Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal hit Donald Trump on the front-running presidential candidate's response to the ongoing debate about the jailing of the Kentucky clerk who refused marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Trump had discussed the punishment Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis faced for disobeying the law on MSNBC.
"I hate to see her put in jail," Trump told MSNBC. "[But] the Supreme Court has ruled. That's the law of the land."
Sensing an opportunity on the campaign trail, Jindal rebuked The Donald in a series of tweets, exclaiming, "You can't make America great again by throwing Christians in jail."
"I understand asking forgiveness from God and respecting communion is a personal decision," the governor tweeted. "But even really rich New Yorkers should oppose jailing Christians for their religious beliefs."
Jindal followed up his tweets with a fundraising pitch in an email titled, "Trump turns his back on Christians."
"Religious liberty is one of the founding principles of our nation," Jindal wrote. "I will never abandon my commitment to protect our freedom so that I can get praise from the liberal media or suck up to Donald Trump."
Trump receives the support of more than 27 percent of GOP voters surveyed, according to RealClearPolitics' average of national polls. Jindal receives 0.2 percent support in the same average.
Jindal has often refrained from talking about Trump on the campaign trail. Instead, he has repeatedly sought to challenge Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker about the best way to repeal and replace Obamacare.
When the Washington Examiner asked Jindal earlier this summer about Trump's laudatory comments about single payer healthcare, Jindal opted for an answer about what differentiated him from Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. With the next Republican presidential debate fewer than two weeks away, Jindal is looking for every opportunity to increase his visibility.
There are no bills yet. Congress is not in session. You see Congress must be in session for bills to be presented for possible enactment.
Don’t be surprised if Trump shows up.
There is no valid reason to incarcerate this woman any longer.
The faggots are marrying each other in Kentucky.
This is Soviet stuff going on now, Trump has new life on the issue.
The SCOTUS handed down this decision when Congress was in session?
Why the inaction on this by Cruz allowing religious persecution?
Why didn’t he protect Christians across this nation?
What does he think his job is?
When Congress returns I expect it to do something to protect Christians from persecution. I also expect the courts to rule whatever Congress does unconstitutional and then I expect Congress to start impeaching rouge judges. It is the responsibility of Congress to curtail a rouge Supreme Count. It is the responsibility of all of us, particularly candidates for political office to point out forcefully that the Supreme Court is going rouge.
Trump better get on the right side of this issue. He’s going to take some serious hits if he doesn’t. This could be his TPA.
McCain votes to suspend Trumps’ campaign until this all gets sorted out!
He did say he hates seeing her put in jail. That means he hates seeing her put in jail. Trump is still correct. What would you have Trump actually do about this? I do not see how anybody not in Congress can actually do anything about it, besides defying the courts and going to jail as she did.
This is a no brainer.
It’s one thing for Trump to say tongue in cheek that the “rule of law” should be respected.
This has devolved into persecution of a Christian woman.
Who is being damaged at this point, who is being harmed?
The faggots are marrying in this woman’s County.
Her continued incarceration is unacceptable.
Trump must counter attack the sons of bitches that are keeping her locked up to stay on point.
I hope they will. That is the only way to change this situation but judging by Congress’ reaction to Roe v. Wade and our continuing acceptance of the almost complete lack of action in Congress, I don’t expect much to come of it.
His comments were very weak, “I hate to see her being put in jail. I understand what theyre doing.” One could easily interpret that as condoning/supporting the actions of the judge. I can understand not being “up” on the issue initially but it is becoming a firestorm and Trump risks being burned up by it.
They will if we make them. Give RINOs in Congress hell until they start impeaching rouge and incompetent federal judges like this Bunning in Kentucky.
Trump should elaborate more on religious freedom
His move along response was poor
I write and call my Representative and Senators pretty regularly. It doesn’t seem to do a lot of good but at least they know some people are paying attention. I go back to the action Congress has taken on abortion. If they have been avoiding taking action against killing babies which is as evil as it gets, I just don’t believe they will do anything meaningful about this. The GOP-E leadership, which claims to be “strongly pro-life”, does not even want to defund Planned Parenthood which should be a no brainer after the videos that have been released lately. I hope they actually start acting like decent people but I don’t have high hopes.
None of us agreed with that ruling, but it was a much anticipated ruling. Conservatives knew this was coming for months. The ruling, one that could be a catastrophe for traditional marriage, was a potential nuclear bomb to the Biblical and even historic definition of marriage for most of recorded civilization.
This being the case, traditional marriage supporters had plenty of time to prepare. Special task forces could have been established. Methods of countering a potential SCOTUS bombshell could have been developed. None were.
Today we're very upset that a young woman was arrested for defying a court order and refusing to issue a marriage license to a same sex couple. It was against her religious beliefs, and for someone, we knew it would be. Tonight she remains in jail.
All day long today, Republican candidates have been making statements about this situation. Some of them have pledged support to this woman. Some are upset that others didn't express what they deem to be enough support. Lets be clear about something here.
That ruling came down on June the 16th. Before the August 4 & 6th recess, there were 28 days of business.
If our members of the House or Senate had been concerned over the sanctity of marriage, they could have introduced legislation within hours of the SCOTUS ruling. They didn't.
Yesterday the first court clerk was arrested for refusing to issue same sex marriage certificates. Since that moment some of our Republican candidates have been expressing a massive amount of support for the clerk, and they should have.
Some of these candidates who expressed the most support for the clerk, were quick to take other candidates to task for not showing enough support. This is where it gets rather interesting.
Some of the candidates who have shown the most support, are now taking other candidates to task for not showing enough. Strangely enough, three of those candidates served in the Senate and House. Did they express their strong support of traditional marriage there?
Was any single piece of legislation written and processed to address SCOTUS skulduggery? Were people like this clerk protected? Did Obama have to use his veto pen? NO! NO he did not.
One whole month came and went and no legislative action was taken at all to rectify this situation.
We have supposed Constitutional scholars. WE have people who have argued before the SCOTUS, and know better than anyone else how this system works. They did nothing!
Now they are on the campaign trail, and it's expedient to rally to the defense of someone who could have been protected. She wasn't.
Today one non-politician has come under the gun for recognizing what the law on the books today is. He said he wished the clerk hadn't been arrested, but the law says she has to issue the licenses to same sex couples.
Folks, he's right!
Note this isn't what some folks have determined it to be.
This politician didn't endorse the SCOTUS actions.
He didn't approve of them.
He didn't say they did the right thing with their ruling.
What this politician said was that he was sorry this woman was arrested, but she has to follow the law. Yes folks, she does. We are a nation of laws.
What can this candidate do for the clerk now? He can voice support. He could come down an protest with others. Neither of those things can put an end to what is going on.
This evening there is a lot of gnashing of teeth. Guys are just so upset that this clerk has been arrested.
Where was that concern on June 17th to August 4th? LINK
Why is it that private citizen is being blamed here? Why didn't our Congress-critters do their job?
Is it any wonder we have a non politician kicking the politician's butts this year?
Cruz, Paul, Santorum... what action did you take to prevent this? Here you are acting as if you really care, but when you had plenty of time to know this was coming, and plenty of time to introduce legislation, you didn't.
Don't you dare try to blame this on Trump. Now nothing can be done. Where were you when something could have been done?
Please note post 74
I do not see this as the fault of the judge either. The SCOTUS decision legalizing and protecting homo “marriage” greatly restricts his courses of action. If you did not see this exact situation coming the day of that SCOTUS decision than you were not paying attention. The point is that this is now the law, and if it is not somehow changed this type of thing will continue to happen.

Well said. It's too hard for them to do their job. All talk. No action.
> Trump is right. Davis is trying to have her cake and eat it too. As Trump said, others in her department volunteered to handle the marriage certificates. She would not allow it. That is not her decision. Jindal should slam Justice Kennedy and the State of Kentucky, not Trump.
Thanks c’98.
Thank you.
I agree with your thoughts.
When we start persecuting Christians for not denying their faith we have crossed the line. Maybe you and Trump are cool with financially ruining or imprisoning Christians that refuse to deny their faith but I am not.
