Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared state of emergency Friday ahead of Tropical Storm Erika, currently drenching the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico and headed for the Dominican Republic. Erika, moving to the west-northwest at 17 miles per hour, is expected to gradually turn north as it approaches Florida Sunday evening,.....

I live in SC so not a big deal to me. I hope they don’t get any serious flooding in Florida. I still have family on both coasts.
>>did they do it to get the associated federal funds??
Yes and for other bureaucratic reasons as well. I work for a municipal utility. There’s a lot of things we can’t even start to do until the emergency has been declared.
>>Now, as for the State of Emergency- that was declared yesterday when the forcast was for a hurricane hugging the east coast an effecting millions and it allows the governor to activate national guard and agreements with power companies and the likes up north to come down to fix lines..
You called it right. I’m in Jacksonville too and the state of emergency allows the utility company to start making operational changes for the coming storm. Even with the 45 mph winds, they will persist for more than a full day, along with the rain that may last two full days.
The Weather Channel will be very sad.
I noticed that. I was without power for several days with Charlie. I did have a generator and still do. Plus all my prepper supplies so we should be okay if things change at the last minute. Just hate the damn cleanup afterwards.
Last projection I saw shows it cutting up the Gulf and right through Tampa, which is unfortunate with as much rain as they’ve had lately. They’ve had some flooding in the last couple weeks, so of course the ground is already saturated. Won’t be good for them to get more rain. Hope your family stays safe.
I have family in Broward and Citrus counties. Broward looks okay (at this point) but Crystal River has had a lot of rain lately and probably doesn’t need more.
Tropical Storm Erika May Weaken or Collapse Saturday, NHC Says
Perhaps much ado about nothing.
LOL
Remember all those stranded buses in NO ?
“Perhaps much ado about nothing.”
It usually is. Don’t know about up there, but the joke down here is you know if you’re going to be okay if the weatherman on TV is fully dressed. If he still has his blazer on everything will be okay. If he’s taken his blazer off things are looking dicey, but probably will still be okay. But, if he’s got his blazer off and shirt sleeves rolled up you’re in for a whallopin’.
Yeah, I’m from South Florida. I remember Bryan Norcross during Andrew.
Ping
I was living in Jupiter when Andrew came through, getting ready to leave for college. Hated to see the destruction, but was glad it stayed away from us.
All those new developments in South Dade destroyed. Sure changed the building codes.
Hurricane Andrews legacy seen in new building codes
After the disaster of New Orleans, nobody is taking risks. I don’t blame them at all. It is better to overreact then not react at all the entire government looked like fools with New orleans.
The lack of hurricanes over the last few years has left Florida without any federal funds for “emergencies””.
a tropical storm is a tad different from a cat 3
But the bay area counties are already saturated with widespread flooding.
Even Polk County is saturated.Won't take much to become real serious, real fast.
A heavy rain event at this point is approximately equal to a Cat2, perhaps Cat3, on the anticipated damage level.
I would very much prefer a fast moving Cat1, instead of a slower, heavy rain producing tropical storm right now.
Either way, I expect the power might be out for a few days next week.
So to all my fellow Florida FReepers, fill up your gas tanks, lay in a weeks worth of bottled water/medicine/pet food/toilet paper, etc supplies, and plan to eat your frozen foods this weekend. Save all the dry/canned goods for later...
It won't hurt, and if not needed this week, it could be next week.
We are way too wet right now to ignore this storm.
