Donald Trump may be the current GOP front-runner, but it's "doubtful in the extreme" that he will become the eventual nominee, let alone president, University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato says.
"The Summer of Trump is unlikely to turn into a Year of Trump," Sabato, who heads the university's Center for Politics, writes in a "Crystal Ball" report released Thursday, in which he ranks the presidential candidates while putting Trump into a category of his own: "The Un-Nominatable Front-runner."
"Trump is an early season fling for many people, fun while it lasts but doomed to break up somewhere along the path to the nomination," Sabato said. And while Trump is still topping polls, Sabato believes there are some signs that his polling numbers "may have peaked," and pointed to statistics that show few people are really actually paying attention to the race.
The "real contenders" boil down to five candidates: former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, said Sabato.
But Trump has proven to be a "stick of dynamite thrown into the presidential pond," Sabato said, and Trump's campaign will influence the race while the party pushes to court his supporters to back the eventual nominee, assuming Trump doesn't mount his own third-party run next year.

Trump is not my candidate
but he sure IS nominatable
and for whatever we may think,
he would at least run a far more effective campaign than
McCain (or even Gov. Romney) did
do I want someone else? yes
but can Trump can get the nomination?... absolutely!
ps: he can also finance his own campaign if he chooses
This ain't no fooling around.
We are coming for the Washingtonians.
The Party is over.
Jeb, Rubio, Kasich? Possibility of a three-way same sex marriage is more plausible than winning presidential election. Maybe Sabato could make it an even four-way marriage.
The guy has zero credibility, leveraged a colleague’s work to start his career, and now pimps himself out to say whatever people want to hear.
These beltway pundits need to get out more. These idiots do not understand the depth of the anger of the electorate and the depth of Trump’s message to return America back to greatness.
I would prefer Cruz, but unless he gets some traction soon, it looks like Trump is going to take the baton across the finish line.
Unlike all the GOPe candidates, Trump and Cruz are willing to go on any conservative or liberal talk or TV show.
Anyone who won’t go on Mark Levin’s program is not worthy to be considered a candidate.
He put Cruz in the “top five” to deflect conservative rage. He doesn’t really believe it. He really believes only that Jebbie can be nominated.
Wow! Sabato is really hanging it all out there.
BUMP!
How rude! He has as much of a chance as anyone. At this point, more of a chance.
Of the “real” contenders, Cruz is the only one I would vote for.
I was in a Big Lots store about 4 years ago and saw they had some book Sabato authored about what he would do to fix the U.S. Constitution. It was 2 bucks in the discount bin, so I figured I would show tolerance and read what he had to say.
When I read how he wanted more populous states to have MORE senators elected by popular vote, I threw the book across the room against the wall.
Junk. Garbage. Zero grasp on original intent. Idiot.
What I recovered in BTUs when I incinerated the book in the woodstove, was hardly worth the 2 Dollars. Needless to say I learned my lesson, that Larry is a nitwit... not a Constitutional Scholar... and there is no point in wasting a milisecond of your life being concerned with what he has to say.
To the Trump brigade it’s always some sort of conspericy...GOP... FOX News....Drudge..... It’s never that he’s a blowhard not even a conservative.. And he’s not going to win dog catcher.
Agree! He’s such a putz! People pleasing for the masses for media sound bites! Nada/bland!
I remember the Euro news going into a similar meltdown over Berlusconi.
No silly, like McCain...
= :^)
Long time RINO..
I never realized how many experts we have in the political realm.
Let me correct that.
I never realized how few experts we have in the political realm.
Trump has flushed the bushes, and the varmints are scurrying every which way.
None of these folks had the slightest clue the rank and file within the Republican party were ready to bolt en mass.
You’ve really got to hand it to them. Stupidity of that level takes lots of work.
You forgot your major talking points. Bad on you...

Besides he’ll be out in a day or two.
And he’s just a stocking horse for Hillary.
And his numbers are starting to tank big time.
And...
