In practice the death sentence is essentially LWOP.

From the raw numbers, it looks like the chances of dying of natural causes on death row are higher than of being executed.

"As of April 1, 2015, there were 3,002 death row inmates in the United States".

There were 35 executions in the US in 2014, the shortest time between sentencing and execution was 8 years.

“Right on. Let him spend the rest of his life in obscurity and then an eternity in hell ... sounds good to me. ;-)”

And if a little prison yard justice happens and speeds up the process I would be quite happy about that.

Were the Colorado jurors on weed when they deliberated?

I’m okay with this. He’s clearly mentally ill.

The hard part for him will be if he ever becomes well enough to understand his actions.

The realization may be more than he can bear.

So when does “without possibility of parole” change to something else?

What ‘higher authority’ has the power to change “without possibility of parole” to something —other— than what it means?

They just call it ‘furlough’ or some such.

Commutation of sentence by the President, sometimes a Governor, finding of trial error by subsequent court action and the order of a new trial, group release to relieve overcrowding ordered by a legislature, legislative change to end life without parole as in many other countries, and whatever else might come along as long as the prisoner lives.

The Supermax in Colorado is a Federal prison. This guy will be sent to a state prison.

He won’t be sent to any supermax at all, unless he really starts acting up in prison.

From my understanding it just takes one to think he’s more crazy than evil and he gets Life without Parole.

A guy dressed like the Joker shoots up a Batman movie?
I can kinda see why one person thought he was a couple fries short of a Happy Meal.

Insane or not, the result of the perp’s crime is the same.

Do the crime, serve the time.

In the case of capital offenses...

Fry ‘im.

No parole, no plea bargains, no possibility of future sentence commutations.

“why do most condemned to “the juice” try to get commuted to LWOP? “

Always a small chance you can escape or get the sentence commuted by an idiot governor.

He’s clearly mentally ill.

Fine. When they strap him into the electric chair, tell him it's a Disney ride. He won't know the difference.

Oh I’m much more in line with the Chinese way of doing things.

One appeal on a capital case, and if it fails out the back door of the courthouse. put a bullet in their brain, and send the family a bill for the bullet.

McVeigh was a but with something to prove. The majority of ordinary murderers play the “I’d rather be dead than spend the rest of my life in prison,” just as Jody Arias did, knowing full well it’s baloney.

It’s not a matter of opinion that murderers laugh up their sleeves at people like you.
