The Daily 202: Bernie’s base problems
Washington Post ^ | 7/20/15 | James Hohmann and Elise Viebeck

PHOENIX—Bernie Sanders is unaccustomed to being heckled by protesters. The self-identified democratic socialist was caught off guard here Saturday when African-American and Latino activists jeered him at Netroots Nation. Sanders’ inability to control the audience – he tried to shut them up and then he tried to yell over them – underscores his broader struggle to expand his appeal and highlights why his summer surge is unlikely to last.

The huge crowds Sanders draws are overwhelmingly white, and polling consistently shows that virtually all of his support comes from whites. After Iowa and New Hampshire, the first two contests on the calendar, Latinos and African-Americans represent a massive share of the Democratic primary electorate in the next two: Nevada and South Carolina.

The senator’s standard stump speech – a call for political revolution – does not include much specifically aimed at Latino or African-American voters. Asked specifically what he’s done for black Americans Saturday, he cited his vote for Obamacare. Asked to offer concrete proposals on what he’d do to help blacks if elected, he initially responded: “We’re going to transform the economic system so we create millions of new jobs.” The generalities only made the protesters angrier. “I want Bernie Sanders to say my name,” they chanted as the senator tried to speak. The event went so off the rails that the moderator abruptly ended it 15 minutes early. “Okay, good,” said a peeved Sanders. He then skipped a scheduled meeting with black activists.

Sanders, Clinton and the rest of the Socialists really don't get what the head of their party has done. He wanted a race war and even his party hacks will be cannon fodder.

Clinton's in on it and is trying to figure out how to make the most political hay out of the situation in the short term. She thinks that by out-pandering her rivals and throwing even more red meat to "minority" racial agitators, she can survive long enough to profit politically, much as radical politicians did with the 1960's race riots. Her opponents in the Democratic Party still naively think that non-minority voters matter to the party. Apart from the most elite of the lot, they don't.

If I had a relative who said such a thing to me, then before I disestablished contact with them forever (or until they came to their senses and grovelled to me with an apology), I’d have to ask them, “Why not start with yourself?” I have absolutely zero patience with any whites who proclaim things like that while they continue to live, or live well. Let them start by giving all their possessions, their jobs, etc to some poor diversity, and then off themselves, for the cause.

Agree. And I have had no contact with him since. I had already been accused of racism simply because I didn’t support Obama. I had looked into Obama’s dealings in the previous 10 years and discovered what a sleaze he really was. Never mind, the relatives with whom I no longer speak are no loss to me.

I embrace such accusations these days. If every other tribe can be for their own, I can damn well be for my own.

Your country is not committing suicide. Her legs are being shot out from under her.

Trouble in Bernard Sanders land. When a hardened Marxist like Sanders is jeered by Netroots—composed of every misfit out of the fever swamps of the Left—then who are you going to turn to? They don’t come any more leftist than Bernard.

Yes, I understand that...I was being flippant....on purpose. Fact remains, Sanders panders to these groups as much or more than anyone...

A person who’s white AND a democrat makes as much sense as a person who’s black AND a KKK member.

The young people in our family (30-40 years old) love Bernie. They can not send him money as they all have monster education loans. And they can not tell you why only that he makes them feel so warm and fuzzy. Also he is just so fair that it’s just got to be O.K. I plan on spending my last dime before I leave this world so they only get a bill when I’m gone.

So far with the young ‘uns I have....18 thru 27....we’re looking at 2 staunch complete conservatives and one mostly conservative, but she’s VERY vocal about the conservative beliefs she has.....and I’m gently trying to wear off a tiny bit of libertarian liberalism she has around the edges.

We homeschooled, which was very rare when yours were little - I get that. And it’s tough to roll back the bullshit from the liberal education establishment.

On the other hand, I have a very good conservative intelligent friend who homeschooled...and two of his three are libs.....and the oldest and her husband are looking seriously at Bernie— and HES a self employed contractor? What a maroon...

Just think how well McCain would have done if he had picked Lieberman as his running mate in 2008, as he almost did. /sarcasm.
