Republican presidential candidate and former Texas Governor Rick Perry strongly criticized fellow candidate Donald Trump for his remarks about Senator Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) at Saturdays Family Leadership Summit in Iowa.
Perrys discussion began with Frank Luntz asking the audience who they would invest in the most between teachers, nurses, and veterans. Perry then expressed his desire to answer the question. He stated, if you dont first keep this country free. If you dont first have the investment in the men and women who are willing their hand up and say, Here am I, send me, You will never have the dollars to hire the teacher. You will never have the dollars to hire a nurse.

You know, I didn’t dislike Perry in 2012. But the man is just stupid. Every time he attacks Trump his own numbers go down and Trump’s edge up higher. Holy cow.
So. What's you're point? Anyone else in the same situation I'd call a hero, too.
McCain has a lot to dislike about him--in fact, I think he's done MAJOR damage to our country and the world by financing proto-ISIS rebels in Syria, and we have yet to see all the blowback and repercussions from that. Truly.
But that doesn't change what he did in 'Nam. I'll give you that as an Admiral's son, he was coddled, and maybe that led to, due to his stupidity even, his subsequent shoot down, but I won't disparage his heroics, nevertheless.
Hey Rick, McCain killed 134 sailors and injured 161 on the USS Forrestal. War hero or eff up? You be the judge.
“I think POW’s can certainly be heroes and people to be liked.”
Why on earth do you feel it necessary to say something so obvious? No one has so much as hinted at ANYTHING that even remotely suggests the opposite of that sentiment. And McCain cannot bask in the much earned heroism of Senator Denton.
Rick who?
I wonder how many “candidates” will fall on the GOPe sword to trash Trump before only Donald & Ted are left?
Little Rick Perry will not even be a footnote in history.
Quite right you are, defender against all evil. McStain as you refer to him may have destroyed the nation by ensuring the victory of Barack Hussein Obama back in 2008. McStain ran a campaign that was sure to lose; e.g., "I'm suspending my campaign" (to vote for a bailout that most Americans opposed). No one really took McCain on for his nasty behavior and acted as if they had a guilt trip when mentioning him. We see the horrific results with Barack Hussein Obama.
I'll just add the Sen. Jermiah Denton (Requiescat en pace) was a completely different person.
So Benedict Arnold is still a hero in your book?
Does being captured by the enemy automatically make a soldier a hero?
Is every person who donned a uniform a hero?
If so what do you call a guy who does something really worthy of being considered a hero?
Does "hero" have any special meaning at all anymore?
war eagle!
I knew a lot of officers I disliked very much. Arrogant, stupid, and ungrateful, felt that being in command meant they where morally and intellectually superior and just a better person. In fact, in the Air Force, especially among fighter pilots, that’s the vast majority (IMHO). I fly—my $h1t don’t stink!
I have no doubt McCain was like that.
The world might have been better if McCain had died? I’ll bet if that had happened, no one here would say he was less than a hero.
Given that, I do believe many of you are looking with a LOT of hindsight in the life of McCain, and yes, it clouds your judgment.
I really don’t think we need to Monday morning, armchair quarterback his actions of that day. That’s all.
Otherwise, have at him, and I’ll join you. :-)
Benedict Arnold was a hero for his actions at Saratoga, yes.
But then he offered to sell his combat command to the enemy for money and rank.
Did McCain do that?
No, but please post again so you can have the last word.
I’m done.
I am a lifetime conservative Republican, veteran, father of a 4-time Iraq SF veteran, and I do not understand this Trump crap.
Trump pretty much a contemporary of mine, graduated high school in 1964, got his BA in 1968,..and then? he could have served his country like the rest of us. The country needed us in those days. A lot of us guys who went would have preferred not to go, but did it for our country (we didn’t do it for the $67/month). But not Donald.
And now he’s dumping on vets. Don’t ask me to respect him, let alone vote for him. Never. Never Ever will I vote for a pompous selfish two-faced crony-capitalist influence-buying, Stimulus-supporting, pro-abortion pro-gambling bum like Donald Trump.
Oh boy, he has a fleet of limos, has made billions off suckers in casinos and says stupid stuff like “I’ll make Mexico buy us a wall.” SO impressive, I guess it makes him a Messiah. People have lost their minds, God help America.
Thank you for your service, but that doesn’t give you the right to make up your own facts.
Every attack on him cements it more and more.
I want Cruz, not Donald, but if the GOPe/MSM industrial complex keeps this they are going to elect him all by themselves.
Agreed, McCain acted well as a POW. But McCain has used his POW Status as a shield. While doing so, McCain damaged his country and benefitted from those actions. It is very hard for me to come to McCain's defense. It is also very hard for me to condemn Trump because of how McCain uses his POW Status as a shield.
Being an Airman, you should know about ejection seats. Military fighter pilots are trained in their use and they have saved many lives. When you eject, you are trained to keep your knees together and your elbows in. Songbird did not. 'Course, he would have failed flight school except for his Admiral papa. That may explain his injuries, but but I'd no excuse for the injuries he has inflicted on his family, fellow POWs, and our country since.
It was the truth. Get used to it.
“Donald Trump did suggest the opposite. He is still just a clever poseur — a phony. Also, Trump enthusiastically supported him, something I nor any freeper on the board would do in 2008.”
I’ve read what Trump said. I did not see that. Could you direct/quote where he said that? As for his endorsement of McCain in 2008, would you have wanted him to endorse Obama. “Enthusiastically supported” — do people, in politics, endorse in any other fashion?
The missile that hit his plane caused injuries first. The ejection might have also, but it’s not like he ejected in training or whatever. His aircraft was toasted.
Being an airman, I knew that some people were killed or severly injured during “routine” ejections (well, nothing really routine there!). The canopy might have got in the way, as you say they might have not tucked in arms or legs, something on the flight suit or helmet/tubing/comm wires got hung up—even had a guy hit in the face with his map and clip board and broke his visor and ripped him up—a lot of $hit can happen.
Ever wonder how a wheat straw can get lodged into a telephone pole during a tornado?
Speed kills.
