Kasich campaign hires gay marriage advocate from California

Ohio Gov. John Kasich's campaign has hired a member of one of the nation's leading same-sex marriage advocacy groups as a strategist for his "independent" campaign committee.

Matt David of Los Angeles is part of Young Conservatives for Freedom to Marry, part of the national Freedom to Marry organization that for years helped lead the effort to make gay marriage legal in America. (A Freedom to Marry spokeswoman confirmed today he is still part of the group.)

David will now work for Kasich's "527" group, New Day for America, a campaign spokesman confirmed. Whether the hiring will lead to any political fallout, especially in conservative states, remains to be seen. Kasich already is surrounded by several key advisers who are gay, although David is "straight."

When the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage on June 26, David tweeted: "SCOTUS saves GOP...again."

In 2013 David wrote a column for the Tulsa World urging Republicans to drop their opposition to gay marriage, saying the "GOP shouldn't fight love."

He said, "Trust me, I know the line about gay marriage. I've written it many times in many speeches in my career advising Republicans: 'I believe marriage is between a man and woman.' Simple and straightforward - but wrong.

"I know because I watched a man marry another man with my own eyes. The emotions and love are exactly the same - smiles, glassy eyes, crying mothers, high fives and dancing (two-steppin', of course).

"The sense of irony must be lost on my political party, which fights against gay marriage and advocates for 'traditional marriage.' Are we not the party of less government? Yes! And I cannot think of a better place for less government than in love.

"Not to mention when Republicans have sound bites arguing against gay marriage on the evening news, and the next show (Modern Family) prominently features a gay couple and is one of the highest-rated shows - we are simply out of touch.

"Republicans must drop this notion that we can shape culture and focus on things we can influence."

A partner at a small LA marketing firm called Outside Eyes, one of the testimonials on the company's web site comes from former Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, who praised his results on an unspecified "hyper-partisan issue."

An attorney, David was promoted to campaign manager from communications director for former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman's 2012 presidential campaign. He was deputy communications director for U.S. Sen. John McCain's 2008 presidential primary effort. Kasich's team already includes alumni from the McCain and Huntsman campaigns.

Before that, David was deputy chief of staff for California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a personal friend of Kasich's. In 2006, David was deputy communications director for Schwarzenegger's re-election campaign, heading up the war room operation.

He worked in the White House for President George W. Bush, managing rapid response for the confirmations of U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito. David was deputy director of rapid response for Bush's 2004 re-election effort -- which many say became a success because of high turnout of Ohioans voting to define marriage as solely between one man and one woman.

If he wants to run for President he needs to establish a core base, the operative word being BASE!

He needs to scrape hard at the darkest, dankest, foulest bottom of the barrel if he is going to get at least a tiny bit of respect that might produce a little funding, liberals and faux conservatives can get away with mining the bottom of the barrel, that is where they thrive, they love the darkness.
