Some White House Republican hopefuls want curbs on legal immigration [Walker, Santorum]

Republican 2016 presidential hopefuls Scott Walker and Rick Santorum are suggesting a potentially controversial way to boost Americans' job prospects: admit fewer legal immigrants into the United States.

The notion, absent from presidential politics for at least 20 years, could help them tap into the frustrations of working-class voters who have struggled with stagnant wages and reduced job opportunities since the economic crisis of 2007-2009.

It could also complicate prospects for a comprehensive fix to the nation's outdated immigration system and tar the Republican Party as anti-immigrant at a time when it needs to broaden its support base of Hispanics and Asians, two of the biggest groups of legal immigrants in the United States.

Why do articles always assume that the Republican Party needs to broaden its appeal to hispanics? A Republican Party that campaigned about the potential for success for all US citizens, across the economic and social spectrum, would appeal just fine to hispanics who came to the US so they could succeed on their own merits

Pandering never wins people to ones cause.

tar the Republican Party as anti-immigrant

So I guess boosting American's job opportunities is now considered anti-immigrant.

Maybe this will quiet down some Trump supporters since he is unlikely to support this proposal.

Not sure. I actually expect Trump to come out against H1-B visas with the phrase, “No American should have to train a foreign replacement to take his job.” Then, if anyone says he had changed his tune, he will start citing Hillary and Obama on a dozen policies and say “”Things change.”

Trump is STRONGLY for bringing back American jobs.

Very much so.

Maybe I misinterpret your post, but just making that point.

I believe Trump is the toughest on international trade. Completely so.

He waivers only on the question of illegals already in the US. I believe he supports keeping those who have jobs, right here, working. They would apply for immigration right along with everyone else. But the others, who don’t work, out.

Other than that, he’s all for America.

Very refreshing.

He does that and I will work for his campaign.

The vast majority of US politicians need to get their heads out of their back pocket; legal immigration is not the issue, it is a political side show.

The issue is, "Who is taking all the low-skilled jobs? And, the answer is not, "Legal immigrants."

From the article: "California is gone because of the invasion," Herron said, referring to that state's growing Hispanic population. "The same thing is happening here in Colorado."

As a native and former resident of California and owner of real estate in Colorado, Herron nails it.

“Why do articles always assume that the Republican Party needs to broaden its appeal to hispanics?”.............

Since the doors have been removed and “Mexico” has moved in.

Considering that the Hispanics WILL BE the majority in but a few years, the so-called republicans see the Hispanic as their new voting block and are trying to win them away from the demodummies.

re: Republicans trying to win over hispanics...

They're doing it all wrong. They should be selling the traditional American dream to hispanics who want to move up the ladder of self-reliance and success.

One has to assume they aren't that dumb and it's all about the cheap labor and control of profit streams from DC. Winning is secondary.

I don't think you misinterpret me: I am trying to explain to some Trump haters here that, yes, he is a liberal on many, many issues; yes, he endorsed BO in 2008; yes, he's said all sorts of things I don't agree with. But what explains his incredible popularity, including with a number of conservatives? Two things: he is unequivocally against FURTHER illegal immigration and his only real promise is to build the fence and make Mexico pay for it; and he is standing up to every single media source or Chamber of Commerce type who is trying to shut him up. He hasn't apologized and can't be embarrassed.

That will only get him so far, but as of now it gets him ahead of every other candidate because Cruz has said that AFTER the border is sealed we can "have a discussion" about those illegals remaining. I take that to mean some sort of "path to citizenship amnesty." So, at the first turn, Trump is in the lead about about four lengths over Cruz, and the rest of the pack is about 20 lengths back. Now, Fiorina is a sleeper.

I'm just saying that in the short run Trump could increase his lead to about 10 lengths if he said something like we need to CUT the number of H1-B visas and that "no American should ever have to train a foreigner to take his job." I think THAT line would win him 20 million votes.

But I'm not naive. Trump has NO position so far on virtually any of the other hot-button issues, including ISIS ("I'll find the right general" isn't a strategy, it's a prayer).

I don’t think most candidates get how important the illegal immigration issue is to the working Americans. In general, illegal immigrants lower his wages, increase his taxes, increase the crime in his community, clog his emergency rooms, and lengthen his commute. Oh, but they do get him cheap lettuce in the supermarket and do gardening he might not do himself. The American worker has figured out that the trade off is just not worth it.

I believe that Cruz is on record as saying he would never agree to a "path to citizenship". After all is said and done, though, he is open to an arrangement where some illegals would be allowed to stay under certain circumstances. But they could never become citizens.

To return a lot of jobs to the US, it needs to do three things.

1) Close the border to illegal immigration, and build border prisons for dangerous criminal illegals to be detained awaiting repatriation after serving their criminal sentences.

2) “In 1965, the United States passed the Hart-Celler Act, abolishing nation-of-origin restrictions. Effective June 30, 1968, immigration and naturalization exclusion on the basis of race, sex, or nationality was prohibited. Under the Hart-Celler Act, new immigration criteria was based on kinship ties, refugee status, and ‘needed skills.’”

This law needs to be repealed. It needs to be replaced with a nation-of-*birth*-origin restrictions, to prevent immigration “leap frogs”, who use an acceptable nation as a spring board to come to America. And as with most countries, money and education prior to coming to the US should matter as well.

Likewise, H1-B visas should be restricted to jobs where a “good faith effort” has been made and failed to recruit Americans first.

3) Exclude from the US market companies that do not employ a substantial number of Americans, use American raw materials, or pay US taxes. If they want to play here, they have to follow our rules.

It is abused and this will never happen. H-1b - kill it because its the only way to be sure. There is no oversight of any govt program. None. It is all corrupt top to bottom.

And, unlike the national debt, or even ISIS, this is something pols CAN fix, and quickly if they choose. This one they can’t blame on the “complexities” of international action or the impact that dealing with the debt would have on the “elderly” or the “children.” This benefits everyone . . . except Democrats.

The al-Reuters demagogues managed to ignore Ted Cruz and the Donald, while attributing all the chronic US unemployment to the 2007-2009 [alleged dates only] economic problems.

I’m tired of illegals... they’ve tuned out to be ingrates at best - criminals at worst.

It’s time to send them home...
