PANCEVO, Serbia (AP) Normally, Leo would run away at the sight of a bigger dog. The small dachshund liked most to cuddle with his owners or ride in the back seat of the family car. But, one day Leo showed that true bravery knows no limits.
When a raging bull-mastiff cross-breed last year attacked a 10-year-old girl, Leo fearlessly jumped to her rescue, barking and biting at the dog way above his size and strength. Leo paid with his life, but the citizens of this northern Serbian town have not forgotten.
Two weeks ago, a life-size bronze statue of Leo was put up next to a children's playground in Pancevo's city park, honoring the dog and teaching kids about animal friendship and sacrifice. An alert-looking Leo, his head raised above his stretched paws, now rests proudly on a white base surrounded by flowers.
Nikolina Vucetic, the girl Leo defended, often comes by.
"I am so glad Leo has a monument, he turned out to be a real hero," Vucetic told The Associated Press. "He helped me."

We’re on our third dachshund. They do have big hearts and they believe that they are four times their size. Or in the case of our present guy, Biscuit, 6-7X his size since he’s our first mini. Even his bark sounds like a big dog.
We have a shitzu/wire-haired doxie.... thinks she is a pit bull! Hubby never like small dogs, now you can’t get her out of his arms most of the time!!
*liked*
LOL. Mr. Mercat wasn’t too sure about this dog either. Our adopted daughter called up one day crying and her birth grandmother had died. Grandma Sandy was something of a pet hoarder and had this five year old dachshund named Bandit. We had had him about two days and were still thinking about calling dachshund rescue when he jumped up in Mr. M’s lap and fell asleep. Mr. M said, what’s this dog’s name? Biscuit? I said, it is now and then next day we chipped and neutered him. He’s been our constant companion now for six years.
Bless Leo !
If I say the word BISCUIT our three Dandies come running.
Dachshunds were bred to fight badgers in their own dens. They have not forgotten this.
