MAP: Here's where Americans are most likely to die from gun shots
Business Insider ^ | 06/24/2015 | ANDY KIERSZ AND DRAKE BAER

As last week's tragic shooting showed, guns remain an entrenched — and accessible — part of American life.

According to the Center for Disease Control, 33,636 people died due to gun-related causes in 2013, the year with the most recent data.

The national average is 10.6 gun deaths per 100,000 residents.

But that number varies widely from state to state.

The Kaiser Family Foundation assembled a table of statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on 2013 mortality rates from firearms in each state. Kaiser combined together various firearm-related causes of death, including assault by firearm, police shootings, suicide by firearm, and accidental discharges.

Some highlights:

• States with the highest rate include Alaska (19.8) and Lousiana (19.3). Alaska doesn't require residents to have a permit for carrying concealed weapons, while Louisiana does (but has fairly permissive gun laws otherwise).

• States with the lowest rate include Massachusetts (3.1) and Hawaii (2.6). Both states have some of the strictest gun control laws in the country.

"Kaiser combined together various firearm-related causes of death, including assault by firearm, police shootings, suicide by firearm, and accidental discharges."

They need to conflate homicides with suicides to make that graphic happen. (Statistically, police shootings and accidental discharges are not very common.)

In New York City, for example, suicides using a firearm are rare, because firearms are rare. Conversely, the rates of suicides and possible suicides via drug overdoses, jumping from bridges and high buildings, and jumping in front of subway trains are high.

I'm much more concerned if someone who doesn't want to die is murdered than I am if someone who wants to die, does die. I don't see how it matters at all if someone chooses to commit suicide using a firearm instead of jumping in front of a subway train. The New York state homicide rate is more than twice the Montana and Wyoming homicide rates. I'd choose to live in Montana or Wyoming over New York in a heartbeat.

My uncle died at age 93. He had been a tobacco chewer since his 20’s. New York State listed “tobacco use” as a contributing cause of death on his death certificate.

I would not trust statistics from New York State any further than I could throw the Statue of Liberty.

Exactly! Take it down to zip codes and a very clear pattern emerges.

Here in north Georgia for instance, where we now live, the homicide by firearm rate is one 500th what it is in certain metro Atlanta zip clusters.

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out why.

Imagine if they did an analysis of “legal gun owners “ ...

I recall a study in Texas that showed CCW people had a lower OVERALL crime rate than law enforcement officers.

“Homicide” is the only important stat.Suicide...accidental discharge...hunting accidents...these things can involve all sort of objects.Homicides can also be committed with all sorts of objects.

33,636 people died due to gun-related causes in 2013

Including Police action. Home self defense, and all other justified shootings.

What percentage were Blacks while committing a crime, I wonder.

Not granular enough. Try running a map of population centers like cities compared to rural areas. I bet Colorado goes from 11.5 average to 11.49 in the cities and 0.01 in the rural areas.

There has been a big anti-tobacco push by out of state groups here in Louisiana the last decade or so. In one of their flyers they included some questionable statistics, particuarly by age (they had listed some deaths in the 0-6 age range). I did some digging and found they included deaths from house fires where the suspected cause was a lit cigarette as a, “tobacco related death.”

As long as they make no distinction between murder, suicide, accidents and self defense, these numbers are meaningless.
As they no doubt are meant to be.
It's like publishing numbers on "death by pharmaceuticals" without any distinctions whatsoever.

That statistic must include suicides, because the murder rate is about half that.
