My uncle died at age 93. He had been a tobacco chewer since his 20’s. New York State listed “tobacco use” as a contributing cause of death on his death certificate.
I would not trust statistics from New York State any further than I could throw the Statue of Liberty.
There has been a big anti-tobacco push by out of state groups here in Louisiana the last decade or so. In one of their flyers they included some questionable statistics, particuarly by age (they had listed some deaths in the 0-6 age range). I did some digging and found they included deaths from house fires where the suspected cause was a lit cigarette as a, “tobacco related death.”
