Presidential candidate Ben Carson is challenging his Republican rivals to link last week's attack on a historically black church to racism.
Not everything is about race in this country. But when it is about race, then it just is," Carson wrote in a USA Today op-ed published Monday.
"So when a guy who has been depicted wearing a jacket featuring an apartheid-era Rhodesian flag walks into a historic black church and guns down nine African-American worshipers at a Bible study meeting, common sense leads one to believe his motivations are based in racism."
Carson, the only black candidate running for the White House in 2016, compared the reluctance by some to label the shooting that killed nine black congregants racism to doctors refusing to "make the diagnosis for fear of offending the patient." His column links to video and articles about Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush hedging on the shooter's motives.
Twenty-one year old Dylann Roof has been charged in the murders and reportedly told police that he wanted to start a race war.
"There are people who are claiming that they can lead this country who dare not call this tragedy an act of racism, a hate crime, for fear of offending a particular segment of the electorate," Carson said.
"I understand the sensitivities. To some, calling the events in Charleston, S.C., a hate crime reinforces a stigma, which they have fought hard to put behind them. But refusing to call it what it is racism is a far more dangerous proposition."

Yes, it was racist.
Cut a black guy open. Cut a white guy open. Cut an oriental open or a Mexican. Cut any “race” open and you end up with only one race - human. All the insides are the same.
The insides might not work too well, you can have all of the above be devoids - people with no love or conscience. People that will shoot you dead or cut your throat. You can also have people that will do anything to help you or treat you with kindness.
This devoid that killed some dark skinned humans is no different inside than a bunch of devoids in Chicago, for example, who have dark colored skin who killed other people that have dark colored skin this past weekend. They have done so for many years and will continue to. Again, turn them inside out and they all look the same.
How sad it is that this fellow named Obama turned out to be as much the devoid as all the other devoids that base their actions on the color of the outside of people. Obama did not walk in to the church and shoot somebody, he did not go in to the cesspools of inner city Chicago and shoot another person. He is partially responsible for it because he has made race relations worse.
This past weekend, unlike a lot of light skinned people like myself that don’t use the “N” word he uses it freely. This tells you a lot about the guy and the main thing it tells you is that he is for racism based on skin color. He is a sick person. The irony is that he half the color of what he apparently hates. Obama seems to be mentally ill.
The bottom line is that Obama made things worse when he could have changed things for the better? Why? Because in the scheme of things he is the racist.
Yes: "The epidemic of black-on-black violent crime indicates that there has been a significant deterioration of values in the black community.
Not an answer to the question. Your quote has Carson decrying black-on-black violence, I specifically asked about black-on-white violence.
Carson is talking about only one aspect of this, which is the least significant, on the subject of race. Let’s consider:
1) Was the shooter motivated by his own racism - along with any other factors, such as mental illness (this is what Carson is addressing)?
2) Was the shooter’s racism created or enhanced by racist comments from various right-wing sources?
3) Is the shooter’s racism a significant indicator that racism, in general, is still a serious problem in this country?
As mentioned, the first item above is really a non-issue, since the degree to which racism, mental illness, or any other factors motivated the shooter is speculation, and only reflects upon one person.
So I hope someone straightens out Dr. Carson on this point and asks him to weigh in on the last two questions, as those are the real agendas from the left, who want to use this tragedy to manipulate the sheeple into believing that the answers are yes, to both.
You make a good point of comparison. The US can deal with all the different human races constituting the US but it doesn’t appear to know how to deal with a double dealing societal threat such as Islam. People are being brainwashed that Islam is just a one sided societal system when the soul of Islam is the Koran.
“Was it because of a flag or was it because of a guy out for a walk one night decided hed go kill some black Americans? “What difference at this point, what difference does it make?”
Ben, a half-wit who flunked a grade and dropped out of high school is all of a sudden sewing symbols of a country that was gone 14 years before he was born? Now, he’s into historical geography?
The American Press is going full out on this. So are the Democrats.
Why in the world would a half-wit, mad at male Americans of African descent raping female Americans of European descent, kill six females? Maybe because that’s not the real reason he was killing people?
If you are mad at the guy who took your girl, wouldn’t that guy be the target?
If you are insanely mad at Americans of African descent, wouldn’t you kill the ones close to you?
This is a half-wit who wanted to be a star. He’s on TV and his photo and story are even in foreign newspapers.
The half-wit got exactly what he planned for.
He’s a star.
Bravo, American Press, bravo.
Thanks for the Ben Carson links.....
Not just no ....but ......No!
Strike three. You’re outta here, Ben.
I would argue that racism is not very far from if not precisely its own mental illness.
1. It is not rational to think a person’s value and character are connected to skin pigmentation.
2. It is always coupled with a self-aggrandizement.
Im not so sure that he is enabling anything. What he is saying is correct. This lunatic killed black people because they were black. That is pretty much the definition of racism. He’s is just tired of the b.s. where people are trying not to call it what it is. The very same thing the president does now by not calling suicide bombings terrorism.
I can also see why so many people are frustrated with his comments. He is using this for his political agenda. Comments like this will help to give him some of the black vote that the democrats monopolize. For me it makes me wonder which side of him we would get if he were to be put into the White House...
The perp said “I am killing you because you are black.”
He left one alive to deliver that message. To claim this
was not racism strains all credulity.
In many ways, this is as much anti-Christian as it is anti-black. This Dylann Roof is a real train wreck, and somewhere in his twisted logic, certain things became conflated, and any smidgen of stain upon one became a stain upon all.
Granted, the years of apartheid in South Africa, and the white supremacy in Rhodesia, were examples of a grave injustice in historical terms, but the reaction to these extreme applications of injustice were to inflict a “get even, see how THEY like it” regime was was even more harsh than the soft tyranny it replaced.
But there is no such thing as “getting even” in the moral or ethical sense. Either the retaliation is far too severe, or the existing tyranny is far to harsh in repressing the insurrection. Balance, “getting even”, is never achieved.
it is not his business
what you suggest including learning if he was ever diagnosed with ADD and force fed Ritalin, is the business of those in South Carolina.
a good politician knows better than to meddle where he has no business.
FReepers of course having nothing at stake, meddle all the time
I’m sorry, Doctor, but someone as mentally ill as Roof could
attach themselves to any cause. You should know that.
Good points. Getting even makes the doer a transevil-doer.
I think it is an interesting point about it also being anti-Christian. That may be, but the overwhelming evidence so far shows he was after blacks and church was just a convenient spot to find them. Still, it may have been a two-fer in his mind. We don’t know yet.
To the extent that one believes that evil is a work of Satan, it was anti-Christian. That makes the good-for-evil response of those Christian families even more beautiful, powerful, and amazing.
Even if he is mentally ill so he attached himself to any cause, it doesn’t mean it is NOT racism. Would it mean it is NOT murder because he did it while mentally ill? I don’t think so. Liberals might, but I don’t.
He probably is mentally ill. No one in their right mind would do and even think such evil things. But it is ALSO racism and also murder.
Hell, he "revealed" that a long time ago with his pronouncements on guns, he's just gone "Full Monty" with this one. Rush L. has stated he's a fine human being and excellent physician who has cared for the most afflicted, children in need of brain surgery, and yet Carson still has a huge political disconnect. I still applaud what he did at the Prayer Breakfast though.
This flag fuss was quite well-timed. Blacks and whites were coming together in shared outrage that nine people were slaughtered in a church. Then, the media had to throw the divisive confederate flag issue into the mix. I can only conclude that the media wants a race war.
Isn't that what Dr. Carson should've been saying? That "now is not the time for anything but coming together in our shared grief". By not doing that, he's just another hater who likes to scream "racist" because he knows best.
