How L.A.’s New Minimum Wage Could Hurt the Poor [by earning too much to get food stamps]
The Daily Beast ^ | May 22, 2015 | Monica Potts

Posted on 05/22/2015 9:21:24 PM PDT by grundle

If someone’s pay suddenly doubles, she may lose rental assistance, child care subsidies, and more.

In L.A., a worker who currently makes $9 an hour and works 40 hours a week (which is not a given, but that would be a full-time workload) will earn $360 a week, or about $1,440 a month and $18,720 a year, before taxes. If that worker is a mom with two children, she is below the poverty line. She qualifies for a bevy of federal and state programs like food stamps, rental assistance, child care subsidies, health care for her children, and Medicaid because she is lucky enough to live in a state that agreed to expand that program under Obamacare.

To take just one example, this mom could qualify for about $500 in food stamps every month. If her wages go up, her food stamp benefits are reduced by 30 cents for every dollar she makes, until they end completely when her income passes $2,116 a month, which it would more than pass under the new minimum wage. Access to other programs, like child care subsidies, drop off completely as soon as a family earns one dollar too much to qualify.

If the new minimum wage went into effect today, without any changes to any of the safety net programs, this mom might lose all of her benefits except access to medical care for her and her children and the tax credits she gets as a working mom, including those meant for poor workers like the Earned Income Tax Credit.

LOL! At the lower level those 'agreements' are worth nothing. I've seen it.

Maybe with enough money for high-powered lawyers, but it was easier and cheaper for me to make sure I was 'judgement proof'.

Not everything is clear, cut and dry like it appears in the movies.

Soooo, this schmuck want people to earn $15 per hour AND get benefits?

And whose going to pay for those benefits?

All those making, what, $18 an hour?

That’s not going to work. Schmuck.

“They hate them when they’re poor, and they hate them when there is an inkling of their stopping being poor.”

They also hate them when they are not rich white liberals. They want all minorities in concentration camps to be serialized as per Margret Sanger’s plan from the early 20th century

The federal minimum wage standard is a one-size-fits-all that is a stupid idea that should be gotten rid of, and while getting rid of it, the repealing act should also ban the practice by the federal gov't. If states want a minimum wage standard, they know best what that minimum wage should be. In places like NYC, the minimum wage is irrelevant, because NO ONE can live in the city working at minimum wage, whereas in more rural areas, the minimum wage might do fine. And that's just in one state.

The problem is our social assistance laws do not reward hard work.

If you work hard, you lose your benefits. If you don’t work, you keep them.

No wonder welfare discourages work because of built-in perverse incentives. Its by design.

If one casts a cynical eye on the entire movement for higher minimum wages, and i don’t believe all the people advocating are thinking this way, relieving the government of these obligations might be the actual goal. The government keeps more and thus can afford to continue to over compensate their own workers. In fact they can add workers. workers which i might add will vote dem in order to keep their own cushy gigs going.
Since libs are by nature math deficient i’m sure some see this as a two fer. Look what i did for you, vote for me and if you want to make sure government stays oversized and you keep your job also vote for me.
Going one step further they likely also believe it won’t result in a tax shortfall. After all either the business pays or the individual does. They’re clearly overlooking business owners taking their jobs elsewhere. In the vein of unexpected consequences i believe this will lead to far more municipalities and states going bankrupt. This will hasten the process if anything.

Sorry, but I suspect the vast majority of these women aren’t receiving any child support. The baby daddies are usually unemployed and/or in jail.

Open admission that benefits ruin the incentive to get a job and work.

Easy solution: Have a bunch of illegitimate kids and dump them on the state. Or claim multiple IDs from multiple residences.

See? Easy!

In certain segments of the population that is a given.

Prenups are absolutely worth it, and they will save you from having to give away your life. If it’s a legally binding contract, then the woman is screwed.

LOL!

I have found, through hard-earned experience, that your expectations don't meet reality.

If the world were perfect, perhaps you would be correct.

Having lived through it, I know better.

Easier and cheaper to be 'judgement proof'.

Of course, I haven't married ex-wife number 4 yet. I'm only up to 3 ex wives.

The relationship between liberals and the poor is like the fellow who wants a pet dog but keeps the dog outside regardless of the weather, just throwing the dog enough food to keep him alive. Regardless, the poor dog is still loyal to its master.

“designed to favor women”

Seriously? I was married to an abusive drug dealer with Mommy issues. Even though he made way more money than I did, I struggled to pay all of our bills while he blew his on whatever he wanted. The gas station would sometimes float me gas until I got paid just so I could get to work. He would leave to “get some milk” and be gone for 24-36 hours with no explanation upon his return. I could go on and on.

When I divorced him, I didn’t even get my OWN STUFF let alone any of HIS. And I had to pay off the credit card that only HE used.

“....... Minimum Wage Could Hurt the Poor [by earning too much to get food stamps]”..........

Not going to happen. Why should they “work” when they can make more on welfare and the “free shit” the government gives them. Truth be known, it’s actually more beneficial to be one of the “gimmedats”.

The FATHERS of those hypothetical kids are probably making kids with another slut (or on Steve Wilkos saying that they aren't mine or on Jerry Springer telling him about that he can't afford is 20 kids he had with 19 sluts). 😊
