Bristol Palin calls off her wedding

Bristol Palin and fiancé Dakota Meyer are calling off their wedding, which was set to take place this weekend.

Former GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin announced the cancellation of her daughter’s nuptials in a Monday Facebook post, writing the couple has “informed loved ones that unfortunately the announced celebration planned for May 23 will not be held.”

Palin wrote that, although it won’t be a walk down the aisle, a shindig of some sort will still go on: “Many friends and family still look forward to getting together that day in Kentucky anyway — and the Palins and Meyers are happily looking forward to still being at ‘the old Kentucky home’ on May 23 to celebrate life, in general!” Bristol Palin, a 24-year-old former “Dancing With the Stars” contestant and mom to 6-year-old Tripp, had announced her engagement to Meyer, a Marine and Medal of Honor recipient, back in March.

Recently, the pair had been dogged by a tabloid report claiming Meyer had a “secret wife” whom he had married as a teen and subsequently divorced.

I think what we're seeing with the Palin women is what happens to many others who get the hot light of fame put upon them. They find that they like it and want the attention. So they keep doing things to attract the media like post personal stuff on FB and dance with the stars, etc.

Yes, they have every right to do it. But they have to know that it makes the media come after them. Which appears to be what they want.

My son’s fiancee decided to go thru with the ceremony despite having met “someone else.” If only she’d had the courage to call it off. Alas all’s well that ends up well, regardless of how painful during the interim. i think of my son as the ‘luckiest man on earth!’

Though I like Gov Palin, the whole clan just isn’t ready for prime time, and likely won’t ever will be.

But it reduces the stress of name picking:

First Son: F150

Second son: F250

Third son: Ridgeline.

Sadly that does seem to be their leaning.

Charles Murray has written extensively on working class whites, as well as other races, being hurt most by the social liberalism of upper classes. While the upper classes still have very much intact families, raising their children in an environment of stability, the working class has increasing difficulty in forming and keeping steady marital and family units, and is generally ridden with greater dysfunction throughout.

Palin’s children so far seem to be on something of that sort of trajectory.

Sorry, these people remind me of the Kardashians.

I am not concerned with the Palins' personal life in the least. I do care about Sarah Palin's steadfast conservative political principles though. That is what we should judge our potential leaders upon, not the news reports of their personal lives. I admire Sarah Palin for her convictions and her adherence to the Constitution. I don't know nor care much about the intimate details of her family.

“I wonder how your family would appear under the same media scrutiny.....don't throw stones. “

Unfortunately, that's precisely the problem, and why, IMHO, it would be extremely difficult for Palin to make it through a full election cycle and win the Presidency. She recognized this too, which is why she hasn't run to date. I've never met or been exposed to a ‘perfect’ family, or one in which there weren't some skeletons that became apparent over time. That said, if the media doesn't like you, and your skeletons are readily visible, they will use them against you. My skin would definitely not be thick enough to deal with it.

Well, some Churches (like the Catholic Church, and maybe others?) still are saddled with that old, archaic, obsolescent nonsense from Jesus about how marrying a divorced person is adultery.

Sorry, I have to set the record straight. A Catholic can marry a divorced person without committing adultery. I'm a Catholic and I know these things. It's pretty easy being a Catholic..our rules only change every 1,000 years or so :)

But with the Palin girls, there is no achievement to go with the fame. They put themselves out there as if they were celebrities in their own right but they didn't earn it. Simply being the offspring of a famous person should not make you newsworthy.

Think about other famous people. How much do you know about their children? Most likely not much. Unless they achieved something on their own. Such as Nancy Sinatra just to use an example off the top of my head. When she scored that number 1 hit, she had every right to get out there and swagger and get herself in the tabloids.

That daughter of Cher, Chaz, or whatever name that he/she goes by these days - not so much. And what a mess she made out of his life. She's only famous for being a freak.

Hopefully that's not the road the Palin girls are going down.

The one and only thing I give Obama credit for is that he has the sense to keep his daughters out of the spotlight. I don't even know what their names are. And that's a good thing.

“Bristol needs to be a bit more ‘careful’ in selecting guys if this thing about her fiancee having a ‘secret wife’ turns out to be true.”

Not a secret wife, possibly an ex-wife.

Married at 19, pretty young, divorced shortly thereafter.

Maybe didn't tell her, bad, but not trashy and not uncommon for very young enlisted to move on.

If anything, Dakota should exercise better judgment.

Dakota is a man, an honorable man.

“Sorry, these people remind me of the Kardashians.”

And just when have the Kardashians ever say a prayer? Supported our troops? Supported the second amendment? Run a legitimate business (like salmon fishing or running the oil pipeline)?

You all should be so lucky as to have the lives the Palins lead.

I’m a big fan of the Palins-while they have their detractors, they all love & support each other. They also live out their lives in the public eye. Partially by choice, but they will always be relatively well-known because of the past.

Sometimes things happen outside your control. Bristol & Dakota seem(ed) like a good pair, and appeared to be happy, in love, and well-suited for each other. (from all appearances-I don’t know them personally)

Perhaps his divorce hadn’t really gone through/papers actually processed, or something like that. Sometimes young folks wanting out of a marriage aren’t as thorough as they need to be. If that’s the case, a delay is expected but not necessarily the end of a relationship.

I hope they can resolve the problem(s) and make a go of it after all.

The Palins also live a very moral life,

So you know them personally?

that is why they are so popular among conservatives and the religious right and the tea party.

I think I will just let the last part go.

Caddy Compson was famous clear back in ‘29.

She was a sort of a pickup. Drove her brother plumb wild.
