The final episode of AMCs Mad Men this Sunday heralds the end of a TV era. The shows seven seasons covered the turbulent decade from 1960 until 1970, dramatizing changing styles and social mores in the lives of Mad Men and women, or professionals in the Madison Avenue advertising industry.
For those who arent regular watchers: A lot of the shows male characters spent their time chasing young women around the office and a lot of the female characters spent their time trying to land or keep a husband.
Critics have consistently lauded the series, not just for its entertainment value but also for exposing the dark underbelly of a prosperous, conservative era.

Hats are good for women, too. I see great hats on people in the Walmart on Sunday afternoons. Baptist churches usually have service at 11:00 a.m., lasts until 12:30 or so, and then they go out to lunch. By 3:00, they’re in the Walmart, still in church clothes, picking up the last few things for supper.
I’m a big fan of the show, but I do think it’s been rather even-handed and not necessarily portraying the counter-culture and feminism in the most positive light, neither.
I have a jacket almost exactly like that. One of my mother’s neighbors found it when she was cleaning her closets and had her send it to me. I wear it with my official black-skirt-white-blouse soloist uniform.
Yes, in the black churches especially, hats for women never went out of style. They go all out.
I can’t wear hats-—never could. I have so much hair that I can put one on my head and it just sort of slides up to the top and sits there.
I have to think America peaked in the early sixties.
My belief also..I think it all started unraveling on 22 Nov, 1963.
Very sharp! I'd love to have a suit like that.
Many of the infected college grads went on to become leftist college profs and hs teachers further infecting another generation with leftism. And that is where most of the increase of leftism is generated today. The leftist hs and grade school teachers.
Even the Dem Party and its members and voters were fairly patriotic in the sixties. That started to change drastically with the nomination of George McGovern in 1972. A leftist like McGovern could never have been nominated in 1960. His nomination, even though he got killed in the general election, signaled a huge shift in the sentiment of many Dem voters. Leftists now ran the party.
The plague of leftist has increased mightily since then with no signs that the plague has diminished. Who knows where it will end. The dissolution of the country split between leftists and conservatives? Not out of the question now.
That reminds me that this week I saw a young lady who caught my attention. She was cute, but what prompted a second look was that she was wearing a modest blouse, a fetching knee-length skirt, and shoes appropriate for her attire. The ensemble made her more attractive because she wasn’t wearing ill-fitting jeans, a sweatshirt, and Crocs.
The Stetson Stratoliner comes very close to the style of Fedora worn in the 1950s.
Bullshit
It’s made for stupid GenX and Ys who don’t know better
Baby boomers like anyone else remembers what their folks and the era was like
It’s just more new age crap brought to us by Hollywood faggots claiming everything today is more moral and self righteously superior social justice wise than all recorded history prior to their point of reference
I’m 57 and when I watched about 10 minutes and saw this absurd picnic littering scene which was such a bos tang untruth I changed the channel
What I have learned here is plenty hate their boomer parents
Do you have a TV show for that?
Btw bone up your timeline....Mad Men is the Elvis generation....the parents of early GenX and late Boomers
Most Boomers are children of Greatest Gen
“Btw bone up your timeline....Mad Men is the Elvis generation....the parents of early GenX and late Boomers
Most Boomers are children of Greatest Gen”
I was born in year 5 of the ‘Boom, 1951. The whole reason there was a “baby boom” in the first place is because somewhat over 10 million young American men had been preoccupied in Europe and Asia for several years and in 1945 they all came home and got married.
They were the Glenn Miller, Big Band Generation.
Mad Men is set in the 1960s, some 15 years after the start of the baby boom and about 3 years before that demographic bulge came to an end.
“The series struck me as aimed at Baby Boomers to confirm everything they disliked about their parents was true.”
This is Colorado Tanker imagining the past that he didn’t live through. ‘Boomers with fathers who served in WWII, and there were a lot of them, weren’t likely to dislike their parents.
Watch “Suits” and you’ll see more of that.
Hats were normal American men’s fashion until a certain President didn’t wear one for his Inauguration and that killed the American hat fashion overnight.
You can easily find commentary on that from the time that it happened. Eisenhower wore a hat. John Kennedy, inaugurated on a bitterly cold morning in January 1961, didn’t.
“The 60s”” might as well have been two distinct decades. When I graduated from h.s. in ‘62, all the girls went on to 1) teaching; 2) nursing; 3) secretarial school. That was pretty much it. By ‘67 things had changed considerably and in more ways than career choices for women.
Nice post
I’m year 11 of the boom as you know....largest year of the boom...in fact largest year of births ever so far in US history Until 2007 which barely edged us out but albeit from a pool of child bearing aged women over double now what it was in 1957
Man remember how many kids when we were around.....as kids....the median age was much lower than now
“Man remember how many kids when we were around.”
Made it pretty easy to get a pickup game of baseball going. Or anything else for that matter... lots of street games, or just wandering in the woods. We’d disappear from home in the morning but had to be back when the streetlights came on. I don’t think today’s kids get to enjoy the sort of life we had.
And muscle cars and great music
Only thing boys have better today is no draft I reckon and easier to get coochie
But that comes at a stiff cultural ticket
slovenly? Come to Poland! Even the young women know how to carry themselves. The guys though are not that bothered about being well dressed.
I like the dresses, but I think the outfit on the right is a little silly.
I like the ones on the left and the right, but the footwear ruins the middle one for me. I hate the trend of ankle booties worn with dresses/skirts. It cuts the leg off and makes it look chunkier and more clumsy.
