I was just over Here, and exit41 had a good idea ...

"I’ve always felt that a nation wide system of pipes would be an answer. An overall plan for the nation, with each state doing its part. A system where collected water from flooded, or over watered areas could be directed to needy areas. Jobs for many, but floods and droughts averted. Just a thought."

And it sure looks like something that we could discuss

How are you going to get it past the environmentalists?

Do light bubs emit light or do they absorb dark?

I live in Texas. We use what we have and don’t use what we don’t.

Floods are an awfully hit or miss source of water to rely on. Building a nationwide system of pipes that may not see use for decades at a time would be more than just a little prohibitively expensive.

From where to where? I am in the Northeast and we have gobs of water. But it would be insane to try to move it further west.

Desalinization seems to be the most effective and efficient method to date. But getting factories made on SO-CAL beaches seems to be a non starter.

Maybe they can build them in Mexico and bring the water north in tankers.

The world’s largest and cheapest reverse-osmosis desalination plant is up and running in Israel.

Wouldn’t it be cheaper for people to just move to the wet areas?

.
On the west coast, a siphon pipe could easily be buried in the ocean just off shore.

Way easier than trenching cross country.

Let CA die of thirst. They have enough water, let them stop mismanaging it.

variation of Occam’s Razor -

if it was so simple and straightforward, it would have been done already

... with some politician (probably a Democrat) claiming credit

If the Democrat politicians and and their spouses can get rich off the project - it might stand a chance of being approved.

If they can find a place with enough water at a high enough elevation where no pumps would be necessary then it would work. It doesn’t have to be that much higher either.

The idea of piping water from the Great Lakes to the desert makes as much sense as telling God, "You have it all wrong. Here's how to balance things."

I believe the Soviet Union took a run at this kind of thing. The result was the ruin of the Aral Sea.

If you drain Lake Superior, you still haven't re-engineered the desert. Plus you only get winter ski runs that descend about 1,300 feet. So the towns around Lake Superior still can't compete with Vail or Jackson Hole.

You just get the destruction of a fresh water inland sea.

“Hmmmm ... hundreds of thousands of immediate jobs, very little expense ... no environmental impact ... California gets water”

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

“hundreds of thousands of immediate jobs, very little expense”

$$$ So we’re going to pay people nothing?

“no environmental impact”

$$$ Tell that to the environmentalists. They are led by people who don’t want development of any kind. In fact, they don’t want PEOPLE of any kind, except a few of themselves.

“California gets water”

$$$ And why the F### do we want to help California?
