Carly Fiorina, who just jumped into the race for the presidency Monday, has spent the week coolly sitting for interviews and cleverly parrying jabs from reporters and critics. It is obvious that after losing her Senate race in 2010 to Sen. Barbara Boxer, Fiorina did some real hard work on improving her skills as a candidate, and it paid off. Nonetheless, the week was marred by a rather glaring mistake, especially for a tech-centric candidate like the former Hewlett-Packard CEO. Fiorina failed to register the domain carlyfiorina.org, and a critic promptly took it over and launched it as an attack site on her record. Cruz before her had experienced the same fate.
Although its always preferable that a candidate not make a preventable mistake in the first place, were all humans here, and showing poise in coping with mistakes is a large part of the game, too (and a skill one Hillary Clinton lacks entirely). On Seth Meyers late-night show Tuesday, Fiorina showed how a clever comeback and a bit of pop-culture savvy can come close to eclipsing the original gaffe.
In this exchange, Meyers predictably brings up the .org snafu, which is the exact kind of story late-night TV viewers and low-information voters pay attention to during a campaign almost to the exclusion of anything else. But before he gets too far into his snarky lambasting of her, she asks, Do you know who owns SethMeyers.org?
(video at link)
Meyers is thrown off his game, obviously begrudgingly bewildered by the fact that she served up a pretty good prank. The it was very cheap line was great, too. She didnt even jump into an explanation of the layoffs question, which is counterintuitive from a political pugilist perspective but turned out perfectly fine. No one would have remembered it, and this particular audience wouldnt have been convinced. But they will remember this. The clip above wasnt cut and YouTubed by Carlys campaign, but by Seth Meyers. Thats a win when the late-night show is doing your highlights.

Way to turn those frowns
upside down.
Voting for Cruz, and haven’t watched late night since Conan got kicked to the curb, but this was GREAT :)
That’s great! She Alinsky’ed the hell out of him.
Carley is the anti-Hillary
Carley is doing great just by being so smart and younger she makes Hillary look like the controlling plodding dufus that she is.
IOW Whenever Carley penetrates the public psyche she is making Hillary look bad. Making her into damaged goods. So keep it up Carley. She is too liberal for me but I like her style
That was well worth the watch. A) It reinforced how much I hate the mindless drivel on latenight tv, which I have not watched in about 18 years. B) Prior to just this moment, my response would be, ‘Seth who?’ C) Carly Fiorina slapped that Lib right upside the head good. And I just love a good Lib slap down.
That was a turnabout worth watching a few times.
I don’tn really care so much about the age difference, but Carly is actually the smartest candidate on her feet in the current bunch, possibly excepting Ted Cruz. But I don’t think Cruz is more nimble or charming than Carly in interview situations.
Carley makes Hillary look bad. She hurts Hillary and that’s all I care about
Cruz / Fiorina has been my ticket for over two weeks.
The HP layoffs is an advantage. Elect Carly and she’ll layoff 500,000 government employee parasites.
May we start with about a half dozen Federal agencies? Just for starters.
She’s not getting those public employee union votes anyways, she should put them on notice. Get a real job and stop feeding at the public trough.
Based on her record in business, she should be embarrassed to run. Overreaching. Just like our current president.
It’s very useful having a female candidate to attack Hillary.
And to the moron who launched the attack site on her, she’s right, she should have done the lay-offs faster.
Carly Fiorina is trying to get the VP candidate slot.
She might even get it. But I think Governor Martinez in NM would be a better choice.
I generally can’t stand Carly Fiorina, but this move was very sharp and sweet. Ol’ Seth didn’t know what hit him.
