A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official cited an epidemic of syphilis among homosexual men during an event Thursday by a lobbying group pushing for an increase in federal funding for sexually transmitted disease prevention from $157 million to $212 million. Were also seeing what we are calling pretty much an epidemic of syphilis among men who have sex with men that really started in the early 2000, 2002, but weve seen a dramatic increase since 2008, Dr. Gail Bolan, director of CDCs Division of STD Prevention, said at a briefing by the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD).
We actually had some areas of the country that hadnt seen a case of syphilis back to the late 90s and early 2000s, and we thought we had a chance to eliminate this infection but were now challenged with this current epidemic, Bolan said.
That epidemic is also spreading to the larger population, Bolan said, citing data that reflects men who have sex with both men and women and that clearly has been slowly increasing since 2008.
In California, Bolan said, there has been an increase in cases of ocular syphilis, which infects the eyes and can cause blindness.
And again the trend is following our trend of syphilis theyre mainly in HIV-infected MSM, Boland said of the ocular syphilis. A few cases have occurred, though, in HIV negative MSM and heterosexuals.
Bolan spoke about the increasing threat of gonorrhea. In 2013, the CDC released the report, Antibiotic Resistance Threats in the United States, which named gonorrhea as one of the Top Three urgent threats in the country.
Were very concerned about the threat of untreatable gonorrhea, Bolan said. Gonorrhea has been determined by the threat report at CDC to be one of the top three urgent threats in this country.
We are down to the last antibiotic class of antibiotic -- available to treat this organism and this organism has traditionally outsmarted us with every drug weve put at it, Bolan said.
Bolan also said there is a rise in the spread of Shigella, a diarrhea that can be caused by exposure to feces through sexual contact. Both the CDC and its European counterpart have reported the spread of Shigella among MSM.
A handout distributed at the event, giving the reasoning for an increase in funding for CDC funding for fiscal year 2016 states that the CDCs Division of STD Prevention and state and local health departments across the country need additional federal resources to reverse the alarming and costly trends of STDs.
In fiscal year 2016 please support an increase of $54.7 million to ensure those on the front lines of STD prevention have funding to prepare for the emerging threat of drug-resistant gonorrhea, respond to the rising rates of syphilis, and other outbreaks, the handout states.
A press release announcing NCSDs annual congressional briefing promotes the use of condoms.
In October of last year, NCSD launched the campaign Condoms (STILL) Work! to raise a clarion call about the lack of focus on condoms as the best method of preventing all STDs for sexually active people, the press release states.
Nowhere in the materials handed out or in the comments made by Bolan or NCSDs Executive Director Bill Smith was there mention of abstinence or monogamous relationships. On the NCSDs website, abstinence is only mentioned in several posts on sex education.
Abstinence is also mentioned in a March 2014 announcement that NCSD signed onto three separate coalition letters regarding funding for adolescent sexual health programs, funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and funding for the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
Among other requests, the first of the three letters asked that federal funding for the Competitive Abstinence Education grant program be eliminated.
"Abstaining from sexual activity is the best way an individual can prevent against STDs--- that is a fact and is also part of NCSDs advocacy," Stephanie Arnold Pang, NCSD director of policy and communications, told CNSNews.com. "We also know that reducing an individuals number of sex partners also reduces your risk of STDs.
"NCSD is not opposed to abstinence, but we do have concerns about abstinence-only messaging and how it prepares individuals for a future of healthy sexual activity," Pang said. "We believe in providing information and tools to all individuals to ensure they are able to make the best decisions about their sexual activity in order to stay healthy and prevent STDs."
More funding for another “Condoms (Still) Work” campaign?
Brilliant and effective use of funds. /S
The CDC released information over a decade ago stating that condoms were ineffective against all STDs except AIDS. Should be obvious, AIDS is spread through bodily fluids which a condom can stop. All the others are spread from skin to skin contact. There is no way to stop the spread other than abstinence or monogamy.
FWIW, condoms were cited as only 85% effective at stopping the transmission of AIDS.
There are reasons thriving cultures embrace heterosexual monogamy, while marginalizing everything else. The more unnatural and unproductive forms of contact the higher the chances of spreading diease.
I DOUBT the MSM could mentally navigate such a HIGH POWERED situation as that.
Great post, Monorprise.
Great cultures recognize that natural marriage is stable and promotes both healthiness and social stability.
Our courts apparently think diseased and unstable is a ‘right’.
Someone should tell nature that it is a bigot.
Sorry bout that Mr. Bolan, but you can't outsmart God with better drugs or anything else. There's only one kind of safe sex, that is, intercourse between one faithful male husband and one faithful female wife.
According to the 1st ch of the Book of Romans homosexual sex acts committed by both male and female antediluvians was one of the primary reasons why God destroyed the ancient world with a universal flood, and Americas new policy of same-sex "marriage" is no less an abomination than that of the antediluvians. I don't expect another flood, but I do expect God to lift the wall of protection that He built around the America of our Christian forefathers.
Also AIDS, HIV, and rapes on men in the military since don’t ask. Also a boy scouts now has been sexual molested by a homosexual in CA.
The saying was, “A night in the arms of Venus and a lifetime with Mercury.”
The pre-antibiotic regimen for syphilis treatment was a year of mercury rubbings on the stomach, combined with neoarsphenamine injections: at least on the surface, a protocol similar to today's treatments of cancer with radiation and chemo. In fact, the Tuskegee syphilis study debacle began, not as a means of seeing how black males could be kept syphilitic (which is what it later morphed into, sadly), but how to get illiterate, thoroughly uneducated black males to be willing to commit to a year-long mercury/neoarsphenamine regimen.
Idiots are gonna idiot.
Why this shocks or surprises anyone. Guess they just have to lie on purpose to try to act surprised. That would just strenghten an accurate stereotype.
Steroetypes exist. When the are accurate and based in reality they can also be called “common sense”.
Disease-ridden boy-raping whackjobs.
IIRC, average age at death of men who have sex with men is 42. Or used to be.
You must have noticed that too. My wife and I were discussing that same thing recently, we can hardly believe how rapidly the US is sliding downhill in almost every way, shape, and form, especially morality.
Sexual morality has disappeared so fast within the scope of Obama's regime that it's breathtaking. A decade or two ago even the most liberal states such as MA and CA didn't recognize so-called "gay" marriage, and now practically every state can hardly wait to get in line to legalize that abomination. It seems that even here in our little rural GA area there are more unmarried couples than married, and unless you know who's who you can't be really sure whose kids are whose.
Once the queers get their man-man "marriages" legalized in every state what's next on their agenda, man-dog marriage? woman-donkey marriage? I don't think I want to know, I'm nauseous enough already.
It’s not stupid... There are people who have sex with people of both genders, they act as a bridge from homosexual to others groups.
That is unexpected. Who would have guessed that a lifestyle choice celebrated so uniformly among liberals would lead to adverse health outcomes?
Because you have a few celebrity poster figures that are better off in terms of wealth and health than the average homosexual is, many others, however, tend to get the bad end of the stick, so to speak. The liberal image is a “plastic surgery” image. They throw out a wonderful image through the media in shows such as Modern Family, yet in reality, for many who are homosexual, racial minorities, etc. The picture is very different.
They already were fine in New Jersey to an 18 year old girl marrying her biological father, so it’s not worth imagining.
