Sen. Ted Cruz on Friday took a shot at rival presidential contender Scott Walker for comments the Wisconsin governor has made regarding immigration policy.
Cruz opposes comprehensive immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship for the estimated 11-12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. But the Texan is a big proponent of legal immigration and making adjustments to U.S. law that would facilitate more legal immigration. He criticized Walker for suggesting that he supported limiting legal immigration if it has a negative impact on the wages of American workers.
"There is considerable bipartisan agreement outside of Washington that we need to improve and streamline legal immigration so that we can remain a nation that welcomes and celebrates legal immigrants," Cruz said in an interview with the Washington Examiner during a brief campaign swing through Las Vegas.after cost estimates came in higher than anticipated.
I think it is a mistake for any politician to on the one hand embrace amnesty, embrace a pathway to citizenship for those who are here illegally, and on the other hand seek to restrict or punish legal immigrants," Cruz continued. "I am the son of an immigrant who came legally from Cuba. [President Ronald] Reagan referred to legal immigrants as Americans by choice and there is no stronger advocate of legal immigration in the U.S. Senate than I am."
"I think the right approach is to secure the border, follow the rule of law and embrace and improve legal immigration," Cruz said.
Walker has conceded a change of heart on immigration policy as he gears up to launch a 2016 presidential bid. The governor, 47, previously supported a pathway to legal status for illegal immigrants. Now he is opposed. Supporting a pathway to legalization or citizenship could be problematic for a Republican candidate seeking his party's White House nomination.
But in a recent interview with conservative talk show host Glenn Beck, Walker appeared to move farther to the right on immigration than even amnesty hawks like Cruz. Here's what Walker said, as reported by Breitbart. (read more)
Almost all of the Islamic Immigration into our homelad goes through legal visa channels.
"Illegal=Bad. Legal=Good" is baby talk from those ignorant of the facts, or willfully trying to obscure the facts.
I thought it was impolitic for Walker to take the position because this is the argument he will get-
“I think it is a mistake for any politician to on the one hand embrace amnesty, embrace a pathway to citizenship for those who are here illegally, and on the other hand seek to restrict or punish legal immigrants,” Cruz continued. “I am the son of an immigrant who came legally from Cuba. [President Ronald] Reagan referred to legal immigrants as Americans by choice and there is no stronger advocate of legal immigration in the U.S. Senate than I am.”
Now, he’ll have to reply. But, as one can see from the Board, there are many who will favor a strong stance as to limited legal immigration. So, it will depend how he responds.
No Kabar, Walker has not changed his position.
Walker has said he has changed his position. That is not true.
Walker still says illegals can pay a fine and he can find a way to let them stay here.
That is a provision of the McCain/Kennedy bill, which he admittedly supported. He backed it then. He still backs it.

At 3:10 Scott discusses whether Obama loves the United States or not. In this discussion he agrees that anyone who seeks public office has to love this country, so Obama must love this county.
Do we have any Conservatives at all here who think Obama loves this country?

Good Post. Cruz has revealed his true colors. Not an acceptable candidate.
why increase anything? maybe if they take YOUR job, you might change your mind.
only moron politicians and commies keep repeating 11 million after the last 4 or 5 years. Most likely 50 million.
We now see the true colors of Cruz.
************
Cruz has ALWAYS been an advocate of legal immigration. No change there. The question is—will others do what they say.
That number is much much higher.”
I would venture that it is closer to 30 million
If Cruz wants to increase immigration from 1 million to 2 million per year he is not going to break double digits in polling.
Nigel Farage and Jeff Sessions are right. Cruz is wrong.
Millions of lawful immigrants are collecting food stamps and other benefits.
The Boston bombers were legal immigrants. So are all these Somalis on welfare.
Do you believe Bush or Obama would deport people for being a public charge?
Walker is right and Cruz is wrong.
I still support Cruz overall but he’s going to screw himself on this.
Yes I have read an American history book, do you think that the British people who rebelled against Britain and created America were immigrants?
Without getting into the destruction caused by the immigration that started in the mid 1800s, do you really support modern immigration that is formed by the democrat’s 1965 Immigration Act?
Do you really not know who makes the right and left in America, I’ll give you a clue, the last time the democrats won the white vote, was in 1964.
Do you understand the role of immigration now, as we smother in our overcrowded cities and broken and permanently shattered communities, and lack any national identity or cause, or brotherhood, or goals, or vision of the future?
When will you agree to end mass immigration, at 500 million, 800 million, 1.2 billion, why not now, at 330 million, 130 million more than what we had when we went to the moon, and a quarter century after winning WWII?
According to Mark Krikorian he claims the true number is 12 million because there are not enough illegals showing up in death records and other records to be more than that.
Also there are a lot legal immigrants who dont speak English so when people see all this unskilled immigration they see 1/6th of people being illegal aliens.
Another thing Cruz is wrong on. Much of the legal immigration is unskilled and not necessary except to save a few bucks for big business.
Cruz screwed up... I like both of them but we need them as a team. One P and the other VP.
Walker’s comments were not that controversial.
Walker, though I can't really trust him (he's a politician after all) is at least saying the right thing about overall numbers.
Cruz is wrong and pandering. His "legal means good" approach means business as usual, with the third world pouring in, under a Cruz presidency.
Cruz:
“ He criticized Walker for suggesting that he supported limiting legal immigration if it has a negative impact on the wages of American workers.”
Cruz answered the concern right there, but Walker supporters still want to press the pro illegal immigration perception onto Cruz. Good damn Luck.
My mom is a legal immigrant from Deutschland, and she supports Ted Cruz.
There is some really dumb stuff being said in this thread about legal immigration.
If a person goes through all the steps required by our laws and actually has something to offer this country by their presence here, why shouldn’t they be allowed to come?
I want our laws enforced, and I want these waves of illegal aliens stopped cold turkey. No country in the world allows this, and neither should we.
But legal immigration? Yes.
Who do you think the American left and the democrat part is, the native population of 1965?
Compare Calvin Coolidge on IMMIGRATION with the lying Ted Kennedy's stance in 1965:
"First, our cities will not be flooded with a million immigrants annually. Under the proposed bill, the present level of immigration remains substantially the same. Secondly, the ethnic mix of this country will not be upset. Contrary to the charges in some quarters, (the Immigration Reform Act) will not inundate America with immigrants from any one country or area, or the most populated and deprived nations of Africa and Asia. In the final analysis, the ethnic pattern of immigration under the proposed measure is not expected to change as sharply as the critics seem to think. It will not cause American workers to lose their jobs."
Sure Teddy boy, right. The "ethnic mix of this country will not be upset." We're now paying the price of what the 'RATs did in 1965.
Another thing that bothers me is all of these education visas we give to foreign nationals. Go to any major university in this country and check the engineering and science departments and take a look at their graduate student rosters, and you’ll notice quite a few Chinese and Middle Eastern names. Should we be concerned when we see a number of Chinese, Arab, and Iranian students studying chemical and nuclear engineering, chemistry, and physics at our schools?
Unrestricted legal immigration is just as bad as amnesty for illegals.
I’m sorry, but Ted Kennedy’s 1965 Immigration Act must be repealed, and legal immigration must be capped at no more than 1000,000 a year.
I’d like to know why you continue to roam the forum scamming people about Walker’s policy.
Can you explain why you keep claiming he changed his policy.
He backed McCain Kennedy in 2006/07, he stated he back illegal paying a fine and staying in the U. S. in 2013, and on March 1st, he stated he could find a way to let illegals stay now if they pay a fine.
His policy hasn’t changed in 9 years that we know of, possibly even longer than that.
Quit trying to deceive people.
It does matter whether you think it does or not.

“...and improve legal immigration”
I guess FR’s resident liberals missed that part in their zeal to elect Walker and his Romney flip flopping.
But then anything but a conservative is what they want.
