Remember that ending scene out of Indiana Jones where the Ark of the Covenant is boxed up and wheeled through an endless government warehouse? Did you know that that place actually exists? It is called the Center of Military History. It is located 30 minutes outside Washington, D.C., at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. The building itself is very nondescript
The room consists of dozens of collapsable hallways filled with the richest American firearm collection on the planet...

This article did not show up in FR search. I just received it in an email today.
This is very interesting. I never knew there was such a place. Excellent comments following the article, especially the one about creating and selling a DVD documenting the items to raise funds for building the museum. I'd sure buy one!.

A very interesting article and well worth reading and seeing it all. In the end it is a pitch to raise funds for a building to house it all so the public can see these treasures.
I think I’d donate money for a cause like that but not if it is going to be in Washington DC or surrounding. My preference would be somewhere in more neutral territory.
My pick is near Lebanon, Kansas. First FReeper who can tell me why gets the lollipop!

The Smithsonian in Washington DC has a magnificent firearms collection but the leadership doesn't like firearms. The main body of the collection is stored out of sight in back rooms (George Washington's sword, Abraham Lincoln's Henry Rifle, John Dillinger's .45, etc., etc,).
I guess we're lucky they haven't melted them yet.

The Army wants people to come to visit their museum. I live in Kansas and have never been to Lebanon.
The museum will be built at Ft. Belvoir.
To: centurion316
Ft. Belvoir....MD....then I would never visit it.

Okay, my bad, especially since I have been there. IIRC it is still in the DC area. Still wouldn’t go there. I guess I was thinking of Ft. Meade - equally a place I would never visit unless it was required.
