WASHINGTON A Michigan family with two toddlers and an infant was stranded in Yemen after being forced from its home by rebel gunmen. A California woman tried to flee through an arrangement with the embassy of Djibouti, but failed. A mother of four from New York also tried that route, at the State Departments suggestion, only to hear the same reply: There would be no help.
These accounts are among dozens presented in a lawsuit filed Thursday by Arab and Muslim civil rights groups seeking to force the Obama administration into taking action to bring home U.S. citizens who are stuck in Yemens worsening conflict.
At least eight other countries including Russia, China and India have rescued their citizens, but the United States has refused to launch an evacuation effort. U.S. officials claim that Yemen, where a U.S.-backed, Saudi-led air campaign is pummeling targets, is too dangerous for U.S. personnel to risk their lives, though U.S. aircraft have refueled Saudi bombers for the last two days, Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren said.
You can expect we will do so every day from now on, Warren told McClatchy.
For the Americans trapped there, the country has become a virtual prison. Its airports and seaports are either closed or subject to attack, its border routes are too dangerous to risk, and major population hubs effectively are shut off from other cities.
The U.S. Embassy is shuttered, with all the diplomats and security guards taken to safety weeks ago. From Washington, the State Department directs remaining citizens to hotlines that dont work and to foreign embassies that cant help, leading many stranded Americans to summarize the Obama administrations response as: Good luck.

I’m not holding this one against Obama, and I didn’t hold the overthrow of Yemen against him either — the place is just plain unstable.
I don’t think the USA would send in a rescue team there no matter who was in power.
That one worked just fine.
I kinda thought it was. I was just pointing out the duplicity of this administration. The whole Federal government plus the very minor minority LGBTQ whatever cabal is willing to tear the country apart over traditional American values, yet the government for its hidden reasons is willing to let an Ambassador die alone. To hide what?
The whole reason why this current Yemeni thing has gotten where it has is because this government is bursting at the seems STILL trying to validate Obama’s absurd assertion that Yemen is the role model of where his foreign policy has worked. Ludicrous. Now we have some Americans trapped there who really should have used their wits and left that place weeks ago.
LOL LOL s/taken
Useful travel tips: When your country’s Embassy staff and its Special Forces members bug out of a country that you are currently visiting, leave that country immediately if not before. When your country’s State Department issues a travel warning for a country you are in or want to travel to, leave or do not go there in the first place
I would avoid Damascus. They’re having some shortages and the possibility of being caught in a random bombing or attack isn’t worth it.
Lebanon and Egypt are great too. Many Europeans vacation there. Have you checked out Hurghada, Egypt?

but but but our man child president said it was one of his success stories. Oh I see, yes it was because while it was another loss for the nation or another lessoning of our national prominance, it is a win for Oturd. Sorry for those who listen to this flap eared jackass.
No country in their right minds trusts the USA anymore because of him, and he constantly tries to make deals with our sworn enemies. He alienates veterans, casts them as potential terrorists, and sticks up for the immoral and illegal.
My God, it's no wonder this country is in such a mess. This is what liberalism/marxism/socialism/perversion brings us.
I used to watch “House Hunters International.” Many of the families featured would move to these hell holes because they wanted their kids to experience different cultures, or something. Somehow that sounds selfish — putting your children in danger just so you can feel good about giving your children a different cultural experience.
A Michigan family “forced from their home in Yemen?” Really? These people probably have dual citizenship but are not from Michigan. We are not being told the whole story, just the bits that will sell articles.
Any Americans not in Yemen because the US government put them there had ample opportunity to get out. They probably didn’t because Yemen is home, not the US. Now they want rescue. Rest assured when it is safe to do so they’ll return “home.” Having said that I didn’t read past the point where I felt the author was not telling us vital information because that would have caused the sympathy factor and thus salability to drop.
I wonder what it will take for the people of this country to realize they elected a traitor and coward as president.
I believe many don’t care. Many don’t love the nation most of us grew up loving. In fact, many liberals hate this nation. There are a lot of losers in society and instead of accepting blame, they would prefer to blame it on something else — government, whitey, Christians,, etc.
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m wrong on this, but I suspect these folks are Yemenis who have no interest in the U.S. but who happen to have U.S. citizenship by birth or by some other mechanism ... and they’re just playing the U.S. citizen angle to get a free helicopter ride out of that sh!t-hole.
I think the U.S. State Department has had a travel warning issued for Yemen for most of my adult life, so I can’t imagine what would ever compel any American with an IQ over 40 to move there with a family.
Weren’t they told to leave a few weeks ago?
Airlifting minors from Central America vs. airlifting Americans from hellhole Yemen: Obama can authorize an airlift of non-American citizen minors from Central America so that the non-citizen minors can re-unite with family members already in the United States, legally and illegally, but, on the other hand, Obama won't send rescue teams to Yemen to rescue American citizens from that hellhole?
Am I understanding the situation correctly?
Weren’t they told to leave a few weeks ago?
The Obama administration leaves no man behind. Women and children are another story.
******
Maybe Obama would be willing to exchange some Muslim terrorists imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay for the American citizens in Yemen. Sarcasm.
Your damned federal gub mint at work.
