The U.S. government on Thursday suspended its operations due to a blizzard that forced schools and offices in the Washington metropolitan area to close and expectations are for up to 20 cm (8 in.) of snow to blanket the region.
The U.S. government, which employs some 300,000 people in Washington and its vicinity, closed its doors although it is expected that some employees will be able to work from their homes.
President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will hold a private meeting but do not have any other activities on their agendas for today and the daily White House press conference was cancelled.
The capital declared a "snow emergency" from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., and that means closing local schools and deploying snowplows and other cleaning services to keep the main streets clear of snow and ice.
The forecast indicates that the snow, which has fallen without letup since early Thursday morning and is expected to continue until later in the afternoon, could reach a depth of between 12 and 20 cm (about 5 to 8 in.), although it certainly may drift higher in places.

If a snow day is called and the government shuts down, then yes the federal employees get paid.
I just did a science expo for a bunch of Cub Scouts here. I had to do experiments that were on the tamer side of things, so I started with the old standby - dry ice in hot water.
However, I thought I’d take the opportunity to educate the parents too, so I brought a helium balloon with me.
I started by saying that even though you can’t ‘see’ air, it still has weight. I showed them the balloon and asked why it was trying to go up - they answered it was because of Helium.
Right. It’s lighter than oxygen, and so it pushes the balloon up.
Then I put the dry ice in the hot water and it fogged the ground, spilling clouds off of the desk and rolling down around their feet.
COOL!
I then asked, “Hey, how come the CO2 is hugging the ground?” They I showed them it can’t go up because ITS HEAVIER THAN AIR!!
Then I asked, “IF CO2 is heavier than air, how could it be holding the heat from the sun like a greenhouse would?
Cub Scouts: “It can’t!!!”
That’s right boys and girls!
I had parents come up afterward and say that’s the first time global warming had ever been explained to them, and now they know it is BS.
True story.
You can believe a politician, or you can believe your lying eyes.

GOOD! Is there a way to make sure it stays closed?
If ONLY we could have a blizzard hit Washington EVERY DAY.
Yes, they do. They classify it as administrative leave for hazardous weather.
I thought it was supposed to be a disaster for everyone if the government “shut down”? I guess that is yet another lie. Oh, by the way, the federal “workers” ALWAYs get paid for their time off so it is a paid vacay.

Huge difference between "will be able to" and "actually will." Show of hands, how many of you think a lot of these folks end up working from home?
Post of the Day nomination.
If only...
Yes, they are there no matter what! They’d even do it for free if they had to.
And nobody even noticed.
BTTT
It’s not really a ‘blizzard,’ just a heavy snow. Really beautiful, tho.
I had a snow day today, yay!
And it was barely snowing when I got up, so I wasn’t sure what to do. But then I got the instant message from my company telling me to stay home!
I’m so happy I scrubbed the floor and and now cleaning the refrigerator.
Slowly but surely my house will be clean once again!
Fingers crossed to get tomorrow off too, in NJ here and I heard it is going to snow all day and through the night too.
It’s still coming down steadily here.
