White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest confirmed Monday that President Obama is "very interested" in the idea of raising taxes through unitlateral executive action.
"The president certainly has not indicated any reticence in using his executive authority to try and advance an agenda that benefits middle class Americans," Earnest said in response to a question about Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) calling on Obama to raise more than $100 billion in taxes through IRS executive action.
"Now I don't want to leave you with the impression that there is some imminent announcement, there is not, at least that I know of," Earnest continued. "But the president has asked his team to examine the array of executive authorities that are available to him to try to make progress on his goals. So I am not in a position to talk in any detail at this point, but the president is very interested in this avenue generally," Earnest finished.
Sanders sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew Friday identifying a number of executive actions he believes the IRS could take, without any input from Congress, that would close loopholes currently used by corporations. In the past, IRS lawyers have been hesitant to use executive actions to raise significant amounts of revenue, but that same calculation has change in other federal agencies since Obama became president.
Obama's preferred option would be for Congress to pass a corporate tax hike that would fund liberal infrastructure projects like mass transit. But if Congress fails to do as Obama wishes, just as Congress has failed to pass the immigration reforms that Obama prefers, Obama could take actions unilaterally instead. This past November, for example, Obama gave work permits, Social Security Numbers, and drivers licenses to approximately 4 million illegal immigrants.
“very interested in.”....sounds like buying real estate....not executing the law of the land....
Why not, he’s already been told they won’t impeach him under any circumstances, he simply ignore the courts or finds a judge to blackmail, what does he have to lose?
King George III all over again. Forget about outlawing .223 green tips. He’s going to have a full blown revolution on his hands.

Can someone explain to me how raiding taxes will benefit the middle class? In liberal parlance, “taxing the rich” means taxing anyone with a job, a home and money in the bank. And any tax on corporations or the truly wealthy will ultimately be passed on to everyone else, including the so-called middle class.
It's scary to me that after all this time, supposedly intelligent, well educated individuals still fall for this scheme every time.
Congress? We have a congress? Whats a congress? What is this congress thing supposed to do?
If he is talking about getting rid of corporate welfare, he’ll have a lot of resistance.
At first I thought this was satire, but realized its not.
A Revolution was started over a king levying taxes...
Not much difference between then and now, if 0 goes through with this.
With fascist Bork Obunga at the helm, this is rapidly becoming a communist/narcissist monarchy.
It’s impeachment time.
We need Trey Gowdy to spend all his time on this.
Congress, for one, welcomes our new overlords.
Doesn’t matter - the GOP is reluctant to grow a pair of balls.
“I support Obama on this these lib gentry and corporate “conservatives” deserve to be on the other side of this unconstitutional illegal action. “
Support Obama in raising taxes? Uh no. Corporations don’t pay taxes and just pass them on people that buy their products. Surely you understand that, right? Gentry? This sort of class warfare, rich-bashing and anti-corporate crap has no place at Free Republic.
Where do you think corporations get the money to pay their taxes? Those with jobs that have money to purchase their product/services!!! The middle class!!! This is lost on the dumb masses. They think only ‘corporations’ will pay the taxes.
Business are only tax collectors uncompensated by the government. Oh, that’s right. The government allows them to exist. I forgot.
hugh taxi race coming up...
hugh taxi raceS coming up...
It's a series...
thank you very much, I'll be here all week, try the veal
Is that why they scream so hard when someone raises their taxes? Is that why they move to low tax states? Why did wealthy Republicans go from being supporters of big government 100 years ago and become supports of small government in the 20’s? You don't think that had something to do with the initiation of the income tax do you? Some of it gets passed through but they pay a lot of it. Why do you think we never heard of big government conservatives 30 years ago? You don't think it had anything to do with their taxes being lowered do you?
Sorry but with the support of amnesty the corporate Conservatives as far as am concerned they can just pay their freaking taxes. Not because they are rich but because they feckless, treacherous duplicitous and just plain deserve to pay them for stabbing us in the back. I used to agree with you recently, but not any more.
Obama is like one of those shyster lawyers in a courtroom, that, not having any thing to stand on, starts throwing things against the wall in hopes something will stick for the benefit of the stupid jurors.
Sounds unconstitutional to me, which means it’s probably true. Does not all spending authority reside with Congress?
right after Bibi’s invited speech, I say let’s abolish Congress altogether. it is (or at least 30 or 40 MC’s are) just embarrassing America....
Congress refuses to do its job...
as a check and balance on the executive branch
....
it has failed to pass any budgets in the last 4 or 5 years....
...
it fails to even investigate O’s eligibility for office (in now 6 years and 2 elections)..
it fails to even bring articles of impeachment, no matter how outrageous the violations we are subjected to...
Obama writes his own laws (through ridiculously improper “exectutive orders” and through manipulation of supposedly-independent commissions and agencies.. and by just ignoring laws and even court orders...
and...Congress does nothing.
it is a giant waste of time and money.
we could just abolish it, and save the $.
