NEW YORK -- Bob Simon, the longtime "60 Minutes" correspondent and legendary CBS News foreign reporter died suddenly tonight in a car accident in New York City.
The award-winning newsman was 73.
Simon's career spanned five decades, from covering the war in Vietnam to a piece on "60 Minutes" this past weekend on the Academy Award-nominated film "Selma."
This is a developing story.

RIP.
“Yes, I recall that he was captured by the Iraqis during the first Gulf War and held prisoner.”
Did they every VERIFY that? Never mind, I was thinking of Brian Williams.
I don’t know what they’ll say- it’s none of my business.
Bob Simon, however, recently did a piece on the persecution of Coptic Christians in the middle east.
sad to see...wasnt he held hostage in the middle east at one point in his career?
First Gulf War. American troops rescued him.
Sad (and ironic — IIRC he covered some pretty dangerous news stories at times).
Driver of the Mercedes claims the livery cab was driving erratically before it slammed into his car. NY Daily News reports Simon’s cab driver is being checked for a possible heart attack which may have been a contributing factor.
A heart attack while driving is absolutely horrible, can’t imagine..I guess they have to determine from the driver(if he is able to talk) if the heart attack occurred while driving or if he got the heart attack after the accident
This was NYC, that was no low speed crash. The drivers survived, one or both are going to jail.
Brian Williams witnessed the accident, but refused to comment, telling the reporter, “The news has become too much about me. Accordingly, I have voluntarily recused myself from further commentary.”
I hope his family finds peace. Just saw a pic of the car: http://gothamist.com/2015/02/11/cbs_news_correspondent_bob_simon_ki.php#photo-1
He seemed to be a straight up old school reporter. RIP.
He spent time covering VietNam. He had some real wartime experiences.
There is no resting in peace. It is either eternal joy or being tormented in the eternity of hellfire.
RIP
Nah, just an eternity of not breathing. Other than that, a bunch of not breathing. Well, that and continued not breathing.
Ugh. Thanks for the photo. It tells the sad tale.
I think we can all agree. A real old-school reporter, with perhaps the occasional lapse (don’t we all have them?). Condolences to his family, and to Bob Simon: A good job in your time on earth.
I never cared for his employers but I am sorry to hear this news. RIP and prayers for his family.
OMG. I didn’t always like his reporting but I respected how much an obviously Jewish man would venture into dangerous territory in Arab lands to get the story.
The MSM takes another hit. Bad month for them.
