NEW YORK -- Bob Simon, the longtime "60 Minutes" correspondent and legendary CBS News foreign reporter died suddenly tonight in a car accident in New York City.
The award-winning newsman was 73.
Simon's career spanned five decades, from covering the war in Vietnam to a piece on "60 Minutes" this past weekend on the Academy Award-nominated film "Selma."
This is a developing story.

sad to see...wasn’t he held hostage in the middle east at one point in his career?
Yikes; rough way to go at 73. Or at any age. RIP.
Damn. And they just lowered the speed limit in NYC too.
They showed the accident scene on twitter, looked like the limo was hit on the side, very sad. I don’t watch 60 minutes but I do recognize his face..RIP
Sorry to hear, I saw him many a time on the tube. From what I remember he didn’t wear his politics on his sleeve.
Yeah, sad way to go. RIP.
Haven’t watched 60 minutes in about 20 years or so, though.
Check out the photo
that looks horrendous, he unfortunately didn’t stand a chance.
Another dead MSM guy. Whatever.
(Like you’re not thinking that, too?!! Gimme a break).
Why should I think about that? I’m not a leftist. And I don’t care what they think. I live by my standards, not theirs.
Yes, I recall that he was captured by the Iraqis during the first Gulf War and held prisoner.
yikes...
Wasn’t that Brian Williams?
One article said that his cab rear ended a Mercedes and then hit and then slammed into a median. The drivers of both the cab and the Mercedes survived.
There is not much left of the cab....looks like the entire back seat was wiped away. So sad.
This is one of those times when I wish FR had a "like" button.

Williams was the first person on the scene at this accident, he gave the victim a direct blood transfusion from his own arm, alas, to no avail.
The way the Mercedes looks, makes me glad my Mom owns a Mercedes, the driver survived so thats all you really ask of a car in an accident to go. The driver said the town car came out of no where and smacked into him, then it hit some sort of guardrail on the highway.
