Southern California Edison IT workers 'beyond furious' over H-1B replacements

Information technology workers at Southern California Edison (SCE) are being laid off and replaced by workers from India. Some employees are training their H-1B visa holding replacements, and many have already lost their jobs.
.
.
The H-1B program "was supposed to be for projects and jobs that American workers could not fill," this worker said. "But we're doing our job. It's not like they are bringing in these guys for new positions that nobody can fill.

"Not one of these jobs being filled by India was a job that an Edison employee wasn't already performing," he said.
.
.
SCE employees said that since August, when the layoffs began, the composition of the IT workplace began to change. "I see a lot of Indian people walking the halls, and less Americans," said a third IT worker interviewed.

They are beginning to reap the seeds they sowed

This isn't a liberal CA only phenomenon, it's across the whole US of A and a wide variety of industries.

I haven't been there since the early 1970s. Is the Calico Ghost Town still there?

The mine ride and of course the train, most of the old Ghost Town buildings are still there but the had demolished the Steak House where I had my first job and met my wife, bastards, the bakery is gone, the candy kitchen, Lindys was ripped out as well as a good chunk of the Buffalo Nickel Arcade and replace with a freakin chain burger outlet, I left feeling very sad, I had a lot of good times, was there for the very first Haunt.

Probably not, but you can bet your bippy if they hired more expensive help, the cost will be IMMEDIATELY passed on to consumers. Ever observe what happens at gas pumps when oil price changes?

I understand. And I will never forget the Obama loving bastards on T.V. election night shouting into the cameras, “Hope and change, we did it!” Well, they did it o.k., let then enjoy it now. And if you think it is bad now, wait 6 months. I know a guy that is a member of the Iron Workers Union that voted for him, twice. Because their leaders said that should.

Sad. I actually bought a functioning black powder percussion revolver at Knott’s “Gun Shop” in 1968. Right next to the Knife Shop.

Kudos to Ted Cruz for trying to expand H-1B visa’s. I would much much much much rather the jobs be here in the United States than the whole department sent to India.

You must think that we, in the red part of California are idiots.
With the addition of San Jose/Silicon Valley area, you've described the 10% of the state that contains 90% of the population.

The rotten liberal tail that has wagged the conservative California dog for the last 30 years.

Obama zombies, we all know a few, they're everywhere.

I wonder if that Iron Worker Union guy has a ObambieCare waiver, unlike the rest of us.

The corporations survive by making a profit. If they switched to philanthropy and justice they will soon be driven into bankruptcy by their competition, both domestic and foreign. Keep in mind foreigners can make any product we make here and in most cases cheaper.

Who do you blame for jobs being sent to India and other foreign countries? IBM or the Indians?

There are jobs where finding competent people is difficult.

And there are certainly abuses of the system, like with any system.

I have an H1B working for me and my company is working on getting him a green card. He is extremely competent and whenever we have openings it is very hard to find anyone to fill this type of position.

And believe me, if he becomes a citizen he will not be voting for Obama types. Hardworking, competent types don’t vote for Democrats.

Abuses of a system are abuses, but they don’t obviate the original reason why the system was created.

If the companies are so stoooopid, as to employ incompetent labor even if it is cheap, they will soon go the way of dodo bird in this highly competitive world economy.

But actually I observe that most large outfits are doing very well on the bottom line. It is the small business which is now dying faster than new ones being created. They simply can’t handle the paper work required to meet gov’t regulations.

The culprit is not the lowly paid India worker on H-1B visa. It is our own BIG Gov’t.

The GOP at work. Or should I say, taking away work from people that earn a decent living, pay taxes and support our economy. Disgusted beyond belief when I read this story.

Kudos to Ted Cruz for trying to expand H-1B visa’s

The H-1Bs is where it starts, the companies fill with Indians, then connections are made overseas, and next thing you know, whole teams disappear from American soil.

No, Ted Cruz is doing the wrong thing, that course of action only serves to dissipates the IT work force and make it so that we don't have skilled workers fulfilling such claims. Remove the regulatory overhead in the USA, let us compete.

I'd feel more compassion for "southern California IT workers" if I didn't think they probably voted 9-1 for Obama, who is running this sh&t.

As objectively as I can say this and without any intent to insult you, that is a moronic statement. Jobs are being lost and it is okay with you because you perceive they are Democrats! This country is lost for sure.

Every two years or so some egotistic conman in college develops a "world changing" programming language that everyone MUST know in order to compete.

Programming languages are a tool, like spoken languages they have strengths and weaknesses.
If I were to design a CS curriculum I'd go this route:

  1. All the core courses would be done in Ada.
The language has several features that make it suitable for use in teaching:
  2. The Interpreters class would provide specifications, both .ads files and language-specifications, for Lisp and Forth.
  3. The Machine Architecture class would use the student's implemented Forth, going down to the instructions in the definitions of words.
  4. The Algorithms class would use the student's implementation of Lisp.
  5. The Languages class would use funny languages like Erlang, Agda, and such to accomplish different goals.
One of the nice things about this structure is that Interpreters is a true prerequisite of Interpreters and Machine Architecture.
(I didn't include the lots of math in there, but there would be.)

Wrong, they come from India, they don't understand the Constitution or Bill of Rights, they support socialism, and socialized medicine in particular, and think guns are scary.

There are plenty of Americans that can fill the role, you have to put aside the H-1Bs and open your eyes.

Gee, few of the American candidates have recent work experience, hey, look at this H-1B here...and so it goes.

Oh the knife and gun shop are still there but the gun shop is a joke and the knife shop prices will bring the word rape to mind.
