A pollster at last week’s GOP congressional retreat summarized the proposals President Obama made last night as “free stuff for everyone.” Indeed, on everything from enhanced child-care tax credits to free community college the president was in a Santa Claus kind of mood in this month after Christmas. All of the proposals enjoy majority support in polls — although that support tends to fall after people weigh the price tag.
Take paid sick leave. Obama mentioned that wherever the issue was on the ballot this fall it passed when people voted on it. But he was careful not to mention that the only state where it was on the ballot was Massachusetts. Yes, the state that hasn’t sent a single Republican to the U.S. House in 20 years and consistently votes Democratic for president by about ten points more than the rest of the country. Question 4, the Massachusetts ballot measure that mandated paid sick leave in the state, did pass but with only 60 percent of the vote — meaning that after a real debate the issue might be an even split nationwide.
Republicans need to make a sustained argument that paid sick leave is yet another mandate on small- and medium-sized businesses that they can ill afford just as they are being buffeted by the gales of Obamacare.
That entire speech loaded with goodies without giving any idea how they will all be paid for, dragged on and on interminably for over an hour.
Contrast that with George Washington’s first SOTU speech, which if given would last for a max of just 15 minutes tops.

First Annual Message to Congress on the State of the Union
January 8, 1790
That would be refreshing - a clear, simple State of the Union address.
It was like Oprah giving away cars except Obama gave away empty promises.
Why doesn’t he be patriotic and write a check to the IRS and pay for others college along with his ilk?
There was a black family in my county a few years ago and they had a house built for them as they had a bunch of kids and never worked.
beautiful house with some land and when the taxes came they complained that they should not have to pay it and someone else should pay for them to live there.
These people will keep taking and taking until someone with guys stands up and tells them if you want it then frigging work for it.
Meanwhile if these free loaders want their freebies then the likes of those who say increase taxes then can write their own checks instead

Except Santa Claus isn't real, there is NO such thing as a Free Lunch.
When you take something that isn't rightfully yours. The person receiving the Free Lunch has to pay for it sometime.

Yep. He touched the hearts of most of his base - free stuff for everyone. I don’t think he offered greenies anything, though.

Well, if “Rev” Al would pay his back taxes a lot of “deserving” kids could go to community college.

When a government offers free everything, someone is getting robbed or enslaved. Look at that so-called hero Mandela. A devout Marxist, he offered free everything, and the economy is in shambles.
I made a conscious decision to not even watch the SOTU or the responses. All theatrics. When congress starts actually combating Obama and his destructive actions, I’ll pay attention. In the meantime, print mo’ money.
It is rare to see a liberal pray. I think Ruth is awake and praying for the speech to end.
