(Reuters) - Prosecutors in New Mexico are seeking murder charges against two Albuquerque police officers in connection with the 2014 shooting death of a homeless man, which sparked protests in the city, police said on Monday.
Former Albuquerque police detective Keith Sandy and current officer Dominique Perez could face murder charges linked to the March 16 killing of mentally ill homeless man James Boyd, police spokesman Tanner Tixier said.
That shooting prompted protests sharply critical of the Albuquerque police department, which the federal government found has used excessive, even deadly, force against civilians. It is now facing reforms and is under federal monitoring.
Sandy and Perez both face murder charges, Second Judicial District Attorney Kari Brandenburg said in a statement provided through her office. The statement provided no further information on the details of the charges.

The first one was the live round?
Instead of just innocent civilians.
Kari Brandenburg is using smoke and mirrors to shift attention from her own misdeeds.
I think they should face murder charges.
And if you listen closely, one of the cops shouts "BOOYAH!" after shooting him, as if he enjoyed it.
I know that would weigh on me as a juror.
Watch the video carefully. There was a flash bang to start. (thrown when he was complying and picking up a bag) Then they released a dog. The dog on lead lunged at him and the handler moved forward (officer induced jeopardy)he stood defensively against the dog, then the cops shot him with the ARs several times.
He goes down.
As he lays there, shot to pieces, they give commands to drop the knife. (doubtful he could comply as he fell incapacitated with it in his hands still)
Then they beanbagged him several times, and released a dog on him for several bites.
The guy was a flaming A-hole with a violent record in Albuquerque, but the shoot is simply not justified by that.
From the article, they are still members of the police force, going happily on their way abusing people left and right.
>>>Instead of just innocent civilians. <<<
In this case, no “innocent civilian” was harmed. A homeless, scumbucket, who caused a 4 hour standoff with police (funny that they waited 4 hours before “killing him in cold blood”) who was armed with 2 knives and ignored multiple commands to get on the ground.
Any armed man who won’t comply with commands when 3 rifles are pointed at him, is clearly a potentially dangerous individual.
Why couldn’t the ahole just drop his knives and get on the ground?
It’ll go just like those cops in Fullerton, CA
I watched the video. There are two people who would be happy at what they did: Yourself and Heinrich Himmler. As he lay dying they tortured him by shooting him with bean bags Then they took the dog to desecrate his corpse by chewing on it. Decent people do not do things such as this.
...or not.
If every asshole was killed, all there would be in the United States would be graveyards. They murdered that guy.
the 4 hour standoff works against the cops, not for them. If the shooting happens in the first minutes, it means things were out of control.
4 hours gives you time to prepare for moves like that, bring up beanbags, pepper spray foggers, dogs can be ready to release and bite, etc.
After 4 hours, any move he makes should run into a solid counter. He shouldn’t be shot barring him charging and attacking, and the less lethal having poor effect.
The reality of that video is that he was an A-hole, but he was a stationary A-hole that he made no move to attack. His “attack” was standing in a defensive/surprised posture after a stun grenade, a lunging dog, and a cop holding the dogs lead.
And the BooYah business was an embarrassment. The bottom line is that Reid and Malloy would have handled this better. This never needed a rifle squad of cops dressed like paratroopers.
Can you read? I said his being an A-hole does not justify it.
So his crime was not immediately obeying police orders, for which he was tried, convicted, and had the sentence imposed within a matter of minutes.
Why couldnt the ahole just drop his knives and get on the ground?
Why did the aholes have to shoot him? Especially when there was non-lethal alternatives on site, i.e. the beanbag rounds?
During Fridays press conference, Chief Eden released video of the moment when officers first contacted Boyd. When one officer went to frisk Boyd, the homeless camper could then be heard refusing to comply, saying he was a government agent. The video shows Boyd continued to refuse officer commands and began threatening their lives.
Im almost going to kill you right now. Dont give me another directive. Dont attempt to give me, the Department of Defense, another directive, said Boyd at the beginning of the incident.
As the hours passed, Chief Eden said an APD Crisis Intervention Team officer and a State Police liaison were called to the scene. Both attempted to speak with Boyd, however, Chief Eden says Boyd continued to threaten officers with death. Police also discovered that Boyd had a violent 20-year criminal history that included multiple incidents of violence against officers. Boyds history also showed years of mental health related concerns.
Video shows when officers moved in on Boyd around 7:30 p.m on the night of the shooting. At the beginning of incident, Boyd can be heard saying, In a private world, if you were down at a bar or a bus stop, I would have the right to kill you right now because youre trying to take me over. Dont get stupid with me!
Video shows Boyd then began grabbing bags and attempted to leave when officers started their use of non-lethal force.
As Boyd is moving, officers then threw a flash bang and released a K9 which appears to bite Boyd in the hand. Chief Eden said officers also used a taser gun and bean bag rounds. Two officers, Dominque Perez and Keith Sandy then both fired three bullets each from their department issued rifles, causing Boyd to fall to the ground.
Somewhat I was agreeing with you rather than critizing. Soon as I hit post and it disappeared, I thought that I should have began with, “I agree” and then the other.
The guy had a weapon and caused his own troubles.
Starting at about the 1:25 mark on the video you can clearly hear the guys referring to knives and such.
Apparently the police are supposed to wait until the guy gets close enough to stab them before taking action. . .like FReepers here would do if confronted by an armed man.
Less lethal rounds.
Anyway, no one sees a threat from a man that is running away from the police officers.
**Side Note*** At Furguson the police argued it would only be murder if the suspect was “running away”, just like in this video, and not running towards.
Back to this story, the D.A. thought so too, and this is why he is charging both officers with murder.
Those police officers better lawyer up and shut up. Anything at this point could come back and bite them.
If they were following the law like you are saying, then they will be okay. If not, then there are in A LOT of trouble.
So what was the crime that Boyd committed that cost him his life?
