It sounds like one of those only-in-San-Francisco tales: San Francisco's sheriff cannot carry a gun because he is on probation. "That doesn't handicap me from being a sheriff," Ross Mirkarimi told me.

What does he tell his officers, go out there and get em boys, I got your back, so long as you don’t hurt or kill any bad guys.

Is this a case of “contracted private police forces” as in Kuffs, or is it the real police department?

I for one do not see a problem with Sheriff not being allowed to own a firearm. Most County sheriffs are politicians first and law enforcement officials last.
When was the last time you have heard of a Sheriff responding to a low profile call? Nope, that is for the deputies. High profile call? Sheriff is there in full uniform (dress or tactical depending on the situation) with at least 5 stars on his shoulders or collar.

Why is he on probation?

Outside of major population centers here in Texas, happens all the time.

I think the Washoe County deputies are allowed two bullets each. :>} Actually I think we have a pretty good sheriff’s department here. Seldom seen. Newly (s)elected sheriff seems to be more conservative than the old one or his “assistant” who ran for the top office but lost. Former sheriff and the Clark county sheriff were the only two in the state that supported the failed anti gun bill last session.
