Starting Jan. 1, the final phase of New York's 2010 electronics recycling law takes effect, making it illegal for consumers to throw so-called "e-waste" in the garbage.
"Now you have to recycle it," said John Shegerian, CEO of Fresno, Calif.-based Electronic Recyclers International, which provides e-waste recycling services for New York City, Los Angeles and 150 other municipalities across the country. "You need to find a legitimate recycler and get your material to them."
Violators can be fined $100.

Singapore, Japan get rich on Bangalores e-waste
I have a stash of treasured movies on Betamax tapes I just can't toss out because they aren't available on CD or VHS.
This might very well be the year I stumble onto an almost new Betamax player at the Goodwill store for only $3.00!
precisely my thought
Big money to be made by e-wasters.
Another regulatory boondoggle to provide payola for the friends of the powerful.
Not so long ago my local newspaper ran a story revealing that the county recycling center couldn't handle the volume that we good citizens send them for recycling.
So they just reload an average of 40% on trash trucks and haul it back across the county to be buried in the garbage land fill.
I guess you could look at it as another government job creation program.
In PA, stores like Best Buy will accept old electronics (like old TV and computer monitors) and recycle them for you.
Nice Betamax players bring good money on eBay.
Wipe all the surfaces clean, put it in a big garbage bag and dump it in a dumpster. Your taxes pay for something. They make me buy these crappy CFL bulbs; when one breaks or burns out it goes right in the regular garbage. It’s not my problem to deal with the unintended consequences of government mandates.
Are you serious?
You have to wonder if the law wasn’t written by Waste Management or some similar large rent-seeking corporation that will profit from that mess.

_______________
Most of these laws are written by crony-capitalists who want legislated business with no risk.
They did something like this in Colorado, so when HDTV became the law people couldn’t toss their TVs so they tossed them by the side of the road.
Looks like at least one person is thrilled with the new law...
Rent seeking is at the heart of crony capitalism, AKA Fascism.

Never heard the term before but, boy is there a lot of it in this leftist state.
Here you pay a recycling fee when you buy monitors, etc. We have one place set up to recycle everything that is only open 3-4 hrs. per day. They’ve made it all a pain.
We throw everything in the garbage.
My neighbors actually got one of those big blue recycling bins so I guess now I’ll throw the big stuff in her can. lol
Not a day goes by that I don’t praise God for leading me out of New York and into Georgia.
Same with tires and batteries...
Just another to rob the good guys.
