Its official. Florida is the nations third-largest state with 19.7 million people. It surpassed New York this month by adding an average of 803 new residents every day as opposed to New Yorks 140.
Contrary to the stereotype, sun-seeking seniors arent the main drivers of Floridas population growth. James Johnson, a business professor at the University of North Carolina, told the AP that Floridas powerful economic engine is driving its growth: I think its going to be for the 21st century what California or New York was for the 20th century.
As the James Madison Institute reports, Floridas growth is built on a consensus that taxes, spending, and regulation should be restrained. Its budget is half the size of New York States, it lacks a state income tax, and it is much easier to start and run a business there than in many northeastern states.
As a result, Florida has experienced solid job growth (the third-highest in the nation for private-sector employment). Its workforce is better prepared than that of many states. Education Weeks annual rating of state schools gave Florida its No. 6 ranking, earning top grades for standards, accountability, early childhood education, and career preparation.
Florida is an example of what can happen when the private sector, local governments, the legislature, and the governor all work together to promote a climate that fosters innovation and job creation, says Bob McClure, president of the James Madison Institute.

I have NO idea why people stay in New York......Calif. has at least good weather.
“I have NO idea why people stay in New York......Calif. has at least good weather.”
Misery loves company.
Up state New York is gorgeous, but I still wouldn’t open a business there!
Ah, but fleeing Yankees bring their socialist politics with them, thus fouling their new nest by voting for more government spending. It will be a struggle to keep the transplants, including thousands of illegal aliens, from ruining the state.
RE: I have NO idea why people stay in New York...Calif. has at least good weather.
I have a nephew who graduated law school UCLA, passed the bar, and has been trying to find a job in corporate law in California.... no luck.
He came to NY and passed the bar here too. He finally got a job doing bankruptcy law.
He quit working for the firm after two years and decided to try his luck back home in California. It’s been over 10 months and he’s still looking....
These migrations just destroy states where freedom has been enjoyed.
California may have good weather (Along the Coast)but has a very onerous cost of living, tax and regulatory environment. Businesses and middle income people have been fleeing California for decades. Any population increases they experience are mostly low income and migrant workers.
Let’s just hope the people fleeing the Northeast for Florida aren’t bringing their liberal voting philosophy with them.
So, John, all the annoying Yankees with their annoying accents, lack of a volume knob, and political insanity just appeared out of thin air?
There re two New Yorks:
1) New York City metro area which is booming as a financial and media hub.
2) Upstate which has been loosing population for 50 years. It used to be home many manufacturers: Xerox, Eastman Kodak and large manufacturing facilities for carrier, GM & GE, etc. Those jobs are long gone.
Cuomo’s blocking fracking is just the latest of many bad decisions over the last 50 years.
It surpassed New York this month by adding an average of 803 new residents every day as opposed to New Yorkâs 140.Now lets all act as if this has nothing to do with illegal aliens. NY tried its best to attract 'em, but lost.
If you like blistering hot summers and six months of Santa Ana winds.
“New York City metro area which is booming as a financial and media hub”
Add to that the nation’s busiest port —> Money always flowing in. But at some point the cost of living and the relatively poor quality of life (high taxes, crime, bad infrastructure, dirt, etc.) has to curtail the settlement of “normal” families.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooo more NE liberals pls!
So what? All the new peeps in Florida are from New York.
I would say three.
The Finger Lakes wine grape growing and tourist area has been growing rapidly for thirty years.
I visited there this past November and was impressed by the beauty of the area and the prosperity that was obvious in the availability of fine restaurants and hotels.
The odd thing that I noticed was that all of the wineries closed at 5 pm. Seems counter intuitive to me.
We have a really good friend that left California and bought a bed and breakfast in the Finger Lakes region. He is also a graduate of the Cordon Bleu cooking school so does catering. He is doing much better there than he was here.
I am not surprised
Everything I have read of California is that the California government is doing everything that it can to stifle business small and large alike.
