Our city is hurting, we are hurting. Today we mourn the loss of two NYPD officers who were gunned down in a vicious act of senseless violence.
As soon as news broke of the tragedy in Brooklyn, I spoke with both the families of Eric Garner and Michael Brown. And let me be perfectly clear, we are all outraged and saddened by the deaths of these police officers. Any use of the names of Eric Garner and Michael Brown, in connection with any violence or killing of police, is reprehensible and against the pursuit of justice in both cases.
At every rally and every march, we have stressed nonviolence and peaceful protests.
I delivered the eulogy at Michael Brown’s funeral and Eric Garner’s funeral and denounced anyone engaging in violence. We have even been criticized at National Action Network, NAN, for not allowing certain rhetoric/chants calling for violence, and we would abruptly denounce it at all of our gatherings. Violence never has and never will have a place in the true fight for equality and justice.

“What racist stuff?” Sharpton responded.
“When you referred to Jews as white interlopers,” the interviewer said.
Sharpton cautioned the reporter against misquoting him and clarified that he was only talking about one Jewish person.
“You went from one guy who paid people off the books and was wrong,” Sharpton responded.
The remarks that the interviewer referenced were uttered by Sharpton in 1995.
Sharpton had sided with a black record store owner against the Jewish owner of Freddie’s Fashion Mart. The owner of the fashion store was a landlord to the record store owner.
“We will not stand by,” warned Sharpton, “and allow them to move this brother so that some white interloper can expand his business.”
Shortly after Sharpton’s protest of the store, one of the protesters set fire to it before committing suicide. Seven store employees died from smoke inhalation from the fire. Sharpton apologized for the “white interloper” comment at the time but did not take responsibility for the fire.
Sharpton has made other racist, bigoted and anti-Semitic comments in the past. The Daily Surge video aired recordings of Sharpton complaining that ancient “Greek homos” stole civilization from Africans and justifying using the word “cracker” to reference white people.
Sharpton has also made thinly-veiled references to Jewish people by calling them “diamond merchants” during the aftermath of the Crown Heights riots, which took place in Brooklyn in 1991. Sharpton, who led protests that led to the riots, said at the time “If the Jews want to get it on, tell them to pin their yarmulkes back and come over to my house.”
