We need more babies! Seriously, this is a problem Commentary by Jake Novak We just learned that the U.S. birthrate fell for the sixth straight year in 2013 to an all-time low. Pardon me for sounding a bit alarmist, but this is really bad news for our economy, our society, and all of civilization. Let's start with the economy. I know a lot of us have been brainwashed into thinking that our natural and manufactured resources are shrinking. We're often told that we have a choice of either radically reducing our consumption or our population or we'll eventually run out of water, energy, and food. Excuse me, but this is hogwash. That's because we heard the same thing in 1714, or 1814, and probably the year 10,000 B.C. And they were wrong then too. What's the biggest reason that the doomsayers about the end of the world's resources have always been wrong on? The answer is that some members of those growing populations decided not to give up and came up with new ideas, technologies and resources to replace and improve living conditions. I'm talking about the people who have come up with the technologies to desalinate water, terrace mountainsides, drain swamps and fight disease with vaccinations and sewage treatment. I'm talking about the people who came up with kerosene to replace whale blubber, petroleum to replace kerosene, natural gas to replace petroleum, and so on and so on. All of the above came courtesy of humans. Reduce their number, and you also reduce your chances for the great innovations that make life better for the humans already on the planet and make life more comfortable and possible for billions more to join us. I got a late start too... didn’t marry until almost 38. We were very lucky & got pregnant 3 weeks after the wedding. Thank goodness for charting & ovulation test kits-they all worked far better than anyone expected! ;)

Wife and I have been trying for years with no luck. We’ve both been tested and are certified fertile. Not sure if it’s a frequency thing or what, but it’s just not happening. Wife will be 41 next year. I fear time is running out.

Sorry, I know you didn’t say that, it was a quote from the article. I am not critical of those who have large families IF THEY CAN SUPPORT THEM, I just think that the statement in the article was too broad, it sounded as if people are our greatest resource even if they are jammed together like sardines. I recall reading something a few years ago about the most highly populated city on Earth and I did a quick calculation and discovered that if you lined that many people up on a flat piece of land that size and they stood in ranks like soldiers each one could reach out with his right hand and touch the right shoulder of the person in front of him and with his left hand touch the right shoulder of the person to his left. I never want to live in a place like that.
Thanks, I totaly agree, in fact I think O’Rourke simply confirmed what most people who grew up as I did had decided long ago. I said it a little less forcefully but if you have grown up as I did on a small farm you know that once you reach a certain number adding more people to that little farm is counter productive. You can only do so much with it unless you move to very unnatural methods. I don’t want to live where people are stacked fifty stories high and grow food in window boxes and under grow lights. I have eight acres here and on the North side is a large creek and on the other side of the creek a very large forest, all belonging to one well to do family. On the South side there is a development with single family homes on lots from 3/4 acre to two acres. I feel a little crowded here.
Avoid our living room then.
I can imagine it, I grew up with three brothers in a tiny little house not much bigger than my current great room.
