Rick Santorum won primaries and caucuses in 11 states in 2012, coming in a respectable second in the GOP presidential primary season. And Republicans have a history of bestowing their nomination on the next guy in line, usually an also-ran from the last contest.
Yet the former senator from Pennsylvania is rarely mentioned in the already feverish pre-game 2016 chatter among the political commentariat and the donor class.
Thats just the way he likes it. Or so he says.
America loves an underdog. Were definitely the underdog in this race, he said in an interview Tuesday. Santorum added that being underestimated again has given me a lot of latitude.
His iconic sweater vests will likely make a return appearance. But Santorum 2.0 will be a very different presidential campaign than the one that came from almost nowhere to win the Iowa caucuses in an overtime decision, he vows.
I get the game, Santorum said.
Where he had to build his operation from the ground up in 2012, Santorum now has a grass-roots operation called Patriot Voices, which boasts 150,000 activists across the country. Its current push, an online petition drive to oppose President Obamas recent executive action on immigration, has generated what Santorum strategist John Brabender says are 30,000 new e-mail relationships.
Whether Santorum can raise the money he needs is another question. Foster Friess, the benefactor who ponied up $2.1 million to a pro-Santorum super PAC in 2012, says he would support him again. The former senator is sounding out other deep-pocketed donors, whom he declined to identify.
He is retooling his message, hoping to appeal beyond his socially conservative base and reach blue-collar voters who are being left behind in the economy...

Satire?
Everyone try to contain your excitement.
***Groan***Please not again. All the 2012 group should just go away.
in an era where a campaign for POTUS costs $1 billion each in the general election, plus over $100 million to get the nomination —
1). Where are you getting the money?
2). What have you promised the donors behind closed doors?
Nothing they tell the public really matters. Unfortunately we’ll never know the answers to the two questions.
Lets start splitting the conservative vote right away!
Santorum’s a social conservative.....there’s a whole lot more to where our country is now then just social issues. We need a heavy hitter...that he is not.
.....”splitting the conservative vote right away!”....
Are we doing another re-run? Since he said he “knows the game” now...then he should know better then to run.
I think the GOP est. is running these guys to get their guy in.
Watch at least 5 conservatives running while splitting the vote so the 'moderate' can win.
No, thank you.
You’re a nice guy, Rick ... but I’m supporting President Ted Cruz.
Who?
Looks like Ricky is gonna knockout the real conservatives again. I guess I’ll be Undecided in 2016 too. Sure I’ll still vote but once again the smell.
2012 primaries:
Santorum won: IA MN ND KS CO TN AL MS MO OK TN
Gingrich won: SC GA
Romney won the other 37 states
The man has become a menace.
Throw Ricky on the compost pile, along with the other mushy liberal RINOs Jeb, Christie, Paul, Rubio and Huckabee!
Too many in the GOP Primaries is what watered down the votes so much that we ended up with McCain and Romney the last two times.
satire?...... we could only wish.
Supported him last time around. Found out later his dad was non citizen and Rick was born before hid dad became citizen.
To top it off, Rick fought to keep records sealed. Only after
the election did that become known. He is plain ol dishonest.
Oh puuleese. Give it up Rick. It ain’t gonna happen.
Rick, your a great guy, your calling is producing shows for EWTN IMHO. Go for it...
Rick is one of the 9 GOP candidates I will never vote for. Of course the top 3 are Mitt Jeb & Christie.
