Michael Tomasky is not content to argue, in the wake of Mary Landrieu's defeat, that Democrats should write off the South as politically-unfriendly territory.

In his Daily Beast item of today, Tomasky goes to great lengths to trash the region in the ugliest of terms. "Reactionary, prejudice-infested, fetid, reject[ing] nearly everything that’s good about this country, just one big nuclear waste site of choleric, and extremely racialized, resentment," is how Tomasky slurs most of the South, saying "almost the entire South" is as he describes it.

I have lived both in the South as well as the North and I have found that the racism in the South is nowhere near the levels of the North. There are some pockets, bit mostly people get a fair shake down here.

This makes me angry. I just moved my family to southwest Georgia from Wisconsin. I work in IT, and the company I work for has a substantial number of black employees in IT, including in management. I have found them to be as well qualified as their white counterparts. Up north, they seem to have Pakistani (non-citizen) and eastern Indian employees at those positions.

One reason for this, they are not shy about hiring military men. It makes a big difference.

My initial response would be a question: If the south is that bad, how come so many of murders take place in Chicago, Detroit, New York, DC and other northern cities?

Or NJ; we only outlawed slavery fifteen years before the Civil War, and are still very segregated. Black-on-white crime results when raiders leave the welfare hatcheries on raids; left to their own devices they can only rob & kill each other.

I drove through Paterson, NJ several years ago and remarked to the person with me that it appeared to be a very affluent city as there were so many young, black men sitting around with nothing to do except contemplate their next move in the stock market.

It’s a perfect description of South Boston.

If one wants to make a disparaging (and accurate) remark about Massachusetts...or Greater Boston....it would be far more fitting to make reference to Cambridge...or Brookline...or Beacon Hill...the Back Bay...the Fenway...Belmont....Newton (where I grew up).They are all largely white,obscenely wealthy (thanks to trust funds),and largely Maoist areas.lots and lots and *lots* of Teslas with "Think Globally,Act Locally" bumper stickers...along with the compulsory Obola/Biden bumper stickers.

"South Boston" (where my parents grew up in the early 1900's) was,until very recently,largely Irish,largely white and largely uneducated.Today it's being gentrified...increasingly populated with hip young things with more money (or,at least,*income*) than sense.
