We interrupt this week’s deluge of executive amnesty and Grubergate coverage to bring you this heartwarming Friday afternoon palate cleanser. First, some brief background, from HuffPo:
They may be our biggest rivals on the ice, but when it comes to honouring our American neighbours, Canadians don’t pass up on the opportunity to chime in. The video, filmed Nov. 18, shows the opening of the Toronto Maple Leafs vs. the Nashville Predators hockey game. When Canadian singer Michelle Madeira began the American national anthem, her microphone failed. So what did the Canadian crowd do? They picked up right where she left off.
They sure did, and impressively so:
They had the lyrics down pat and didn’t miss a beat. Stirring stuff. Show of hands: How many of you know the words to the Canadian national anthem? I happen to, but that’s mostly a product of being exposed to it so many times as a hockey fan (go Devils). I’ll leave you with this clip from an NHL game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers just after the terrorist shootings in Ottawa last month. Even though a Canadian team wasn’t competing on the ice, the pregame ceremony featured a moving rendition of ‘O Canada’, with the American crowd singing along (admittedly with lyrics displayed on the jumbotron) in solidarity with our great friends and neighbors to the north:
We stand on guard for thee!
Thank you.
"When America falls, darkness will cover the face of the earth for a thousand years."
That's one of my taglines. See my current one, below.
I love Canadians and visiting Canada. Canadian NHL players are some of the nicest, most down to earth people ever - except when they're on the ice, of course!
That was pretty amazing.
Rules!
Celena Ray who sings the anthems before Stars games.
'Bout time they won a home game!
I ALWAYS stand for BOTH anthems. Good sportsmanship and all. I would NEVER boo any team. However, Canucks have no problem booing their own team. I find that odd. Since I wouldn’t even boo the opposition’s team.
That was awesome and I forwarded it too all my hockey friends.
Ô Canada!
Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l’épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
If I should ever attend a sport meet in Canada i.e hockey I will have with me written on paper their national anthem so I can sing along with everyone.
Going to a Canadiens game in Montreal is on my bucket list.
I’d like to watch a Canadien rules football game ... 55yd line?
Seeing a Saskatchewan Roughriders game is also on the list. I started following them a few years ago.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers ???
American left-wingers enjoy bashing their own country and pointing to places like Canada as more “ideal” and more liberal. (Whether that picture is accurate is a debate for another time). The ignorant leftists would be surprised to find that ordinary Canadians have a far more benevolent view of America than our own liberals could ever imagine.
American leftists suffer from a similar ignorance when it comes to their views about Europe. They think Europe is a land of universal socialism, multiculturalism, and “anti-racism.” They ignore or deny the terrible strain that mass Islamic immigration has placed upon Europe, and deny even more ferociously the legitimacy of the response of the indigenous European people, which has taken the form of nationalist parties that are far more organized and popular than any equivalents in the United States.
We (meaning virtually every Western country) are all under assault from a common enemy, a tsunami of illegal Third World immigration. A tsunami that will, if left unchecked, cause permanent changes to the culture and quality of life in the host countries. Changes that are not only undesirable, but were never requested or voted upon by the host population. I believe that in the future, petty differences between Western countries will be put more and more to the side, as more and more people realize just how much we have in common and just who the real enemy is.
That’s classy!
One trip to a European soccer game will dispel them of that illusion.
Mine too! Been to an Expos game, but that sucked.
Reminded me of the Metrodome (The Metrodome was based on that dump)
If you do make it to Regina to see a game, you may want one of these: . They are much less messy than these:
BTW, Calgary, AB is the largest 'Saskatchewan' city in Canada, with more 'flatlanders' than either Saskatoon or Regina. Any time the Roughriders play at McMahon, you can count on a sold out game.
LOL yes I know. Season ticket holder...and yes it’s about damn time. I was getting depressed.
