I was close to beginning this article by saying only in New York. Sadly, thats not true. There are a number of states today with some truly horrible gun laws and attitudes toward Second Amendment rights. But the Empire State is still right up near the top of that list and this story wont do much to improve our reputation.
Buffalo, New York police are now visiting the homes of those recently departed in search of firearms as part of a new plan to help keep tabs on local guns.
The move, put into effect by Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda, is described as an effort to stop firearms, specifically handguns, from winding up back in circulation and off the books.
We recently started a program where were cross referencing all the pistol permit holders with the death records, and were sending people out to collect the guns whenever possible so that they dont end up in the wrong hands,
(Excerpt) Read more at hotair.com ...
This is why they are pushing the gun transfer laws, like the one just passed in Washington state, and what they passed in Colorado. Did your loved one complete the proper paperwork authorizing gun inheritance before he passed on? Nope? Then they will confiscate.
Till death do us part........................
And with that we now have the Government in charge of YOUR personal property.
But hey, No ones talking Gun Confiscation .. /Sarc.
Its not quite as bleak a picture as you paint here in the Empire State. We are may issue and thus if a gun owner dies and no one has a permit, the police may take such weapons.
There are 2 solutions. First, delay the obituary, the police read them, too. Second, have an estate plan and register your guns on someone elses permit.
For example, I have my brothers guns on mine and he has mine on his. Our wills reflect this, problem solved.
If you plan poorly be it in you possessions or finances, the state makes the decisions. The New York State police are not the gestapo, they are following the law.

The Gestapo was just following the law, too.
Sadly, I suspect the thinking of this commenter is typical for New Yorkers.
I keep wondering why grieving families would go for a boat ride so soon after burying a loved one ..... or before while they’re dying ....
To quote from the cartoon make mine freedom “ where is your warrant flatfoot”
That is theft, and is illegal.
Purge new York from theunion
The state is simply no longer America
And ...
Registration leads to confiscation !
Maybe they (the Stazi) should pry the gold fillings out of the dead people’s mouths JUST in case the gold used in the fillings MAY have been used in a drug deal at some point....
[Video] DC Permit Process, Cop Says 2nd Amendment is For When the British Are Coming

Lets see, do I make a lewd joke about British porn based on the cops comments in this story or do I take the high road and just get right into why The District of Columbias new carry permit process is an absolute joke.
I guess well take the high road like we always do here (but please feel free to use your imagination on the British jokes).
Investigative reporter Emily Miller, who literally wrote the book on gun rights in our nations capitol (see Emily Gets Her Gun), who is now a reporter with My Fox DC, attempts to obtain a permit to carry in Washington and the results are about what was expected.
What she found (and what most people already assumed) is that its pretty much impossible to get a permit to carry in DC. DC is currently a may issue district, which means you must prove you need a permit and its up to the authorities to decide if that need is legit.
Miller tried to argue that since she lives, works, and travels in one of the highest violent crime areas in the country (Washington DC) that she needs a permit. However, the officer she spoke with said that wasnt good enough.
Here are some of the comments from the officer she dealt with:
You need to meet two criteria, Agurs explained. First that your life is in danger, your family or your property, or you have the type of business you carry large sums of money, jewelry. Under those circumstances, you can get a carry permit in DC.
To prove my life is in danger? I asked. Obviously there is a rising crime rate and a high rate of murders and sexual assaults in D.C. is that enough to say I want this for self-defense?
You have to prove you need concealed carry as opposed to just wanting one, he replied.
Prove a need for a constitutional right? Thats what D.C.s new law says.
The application that Agurs gave me said that living and working in a high crime city is not enough to get a carry permit. I read further down where it says that it has to be a special danger to your life.
Whats the difference between a regular danger like getting raped and murdered on the street and a special danger? You have to prove you are being targeted.
Do I have to give evidence? I asked.
Yes maam, said Agurs.
I was a victim of a home invasion. And Ive gotten a threat against me. Do I just give the police records? I asked.
Yes, maam, he said.
Perhaps the worst comment came when a police employee argues that the Second Amendment was written during a time when the British were coming (#BritishPornJokes). Of course anyone who passed American History (and paid a little bit of attention) knows, the Bill of Rights was ratified well after the Revolutionary War. Well, except that guy.

Registration DOES lead to confiscation.
Who knew?

Outright THEFT.
Illegal search and siezure and since it is government officials carrying this out, a violation of the Civil Rights Act as well.
Whoever, under color of any law, statute, ordinance, regulation, or custom, willfully subjects any person in any State, Territory, Commonwealth, Possession, or District to the deprivation of any rights, privileges, or immunities secured or protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States, or to different punishments, pains, or penalties, on account of such person being an alien, or by reason of his color, or race, than are prescribed for the punishment of citizens, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if bodily injury results from the acts committed in violation of this section or if such acts include the use, attempted use, or threatened use of a dangerous weapon, explosives, or fire, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and if death results from the acts committed in violation of this section or if such acts include kidnapping or an attempt to kidnap, aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to commit aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to kill, shall be fined under this title, or imprisoned for any term of years or for life, or both, or may be sentenced to death.
IOW, multiple violations of Federal Law that no local BS can override.
Brown Shirts ahoy!
Did any other posts ask this guy where we could find the words “...unless a person engages in ‘poor’ estate planning” in the 2nd Amendment?
I know I can’t find it in my copy of the Constitution.
I wonder if anyone is going to offer up their guns “ammunition first”.
You got me there. I didn't pick up on the illegality of the dual registration. I was focusing on the comfort the guy seemed to have with jumping through hoops (and lack of sympathy for anybody unsophisticated enough to navigate the hoops).
PS - The preamble of THIS guy’s copy of the Constitution probably starts out “We the Sheeple...”
