It's not often that a White House official gets mocked on both Saturday Night Live and a major daily newspaper before he makes his first public appearance.
But Ron Klain's low-profile first week as President Barack Obama's behind-the-scenes Ebola "czar" has become another attack point for a White House struggling to show it's on top of the crisis.
Since starting last Wednesday, Klain has been seen only once, in a photo op on his first day, leaving health officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Institutes of Health - and Obama himself - to be the public "face" of the response.
The White House has declined to give details about his activities, especially what role he played as governors Andrew Cuomo of New York and Chris Christie of New Jersey undermined the White House's attempt to keep the nation calm about the risk posed by healthcare workers returning from Ebola-stricken West Africa.
"I recognize that all of you have not had a chance to see him and talk to him every day, but the president certainly has," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters on Tuesday about Klein.
Klain's lack of a public profile has fueled attacks by conservative critics who last week seized upon his lack of medical expertise. Klain, 53, is a lawyer and political insider who previously served as chief of staff to Vice Presidents Joe Biden and Al Gore and left the White House in 2011 to help AOL co-founder Steve Case oversee his holdings.
The White House has tried to temper expectations that Klain will emerge as a regular voice on Ebola.

He’s probably in the drunk tank detoxing somewhere.
Can’t blame him. I wouldn’t want to be associated with it either.
“To a Democrat, saying something about a problem is the same thing as doing something about a problem.” - George Stephanopoulos, as a member of the 1st Clinton Administration................
The czar and czarina are in the closet researching and searching.(groping) All is well.
Just what is the Ebola Czar’s job description and how much is getting paid to do that...taxpayers have a right to know.
Perhaps he is in Obola training, think The Groom of the Stool PRIVY Chamber CZAR.
Greasing the skids, arranging backroom deals & setting up a whole new bureaucracy are things you don’t do in the light of day...
Czars are not meant to be found, they are only there to take the blame, as obama screws everything up, they serve no other purpose, as of now Klain is doing an outstanding job staying invisible and accumulating blame, don’t worry Klain will be in the limelight soon enough.
After Klain performs his duty deflecting blame from obama’s Obola, and is successful, he will be given a new position performing the same duty, as obama continues to create yet another greater crisis.
Smoke and Mirrors - see Obama says, I am doing something, but the problem is just to complex for me so just let it run its course.
...or the bath house.....
Anyway its Rasis for Obama to appoint a white lawyer yuppie wannabe to this job.....
How about some of Holders people who are expert Obamacare Navigators....
He’s out looking for ebola!
Maybe the newly appointed Ebola Czar can be found in the back of the room disguised as a Secret Service agent auditing Biology 101 at the Sidwell Friends School in Northwest Washington, the private Quaker school where the Obama daughters go and where some of Joe Biden’s grandchildren have gone.
That could have just as easily been written: as governors Andrew Cuomo of New York and Chris Christie of New Jersey attempted to manage the risk posed by healthcare workers returning from Ebola-stricken West Africa while the White House objected!
Yes. A BIG hand.
Most in this Clown Car administration should be “quarantined” in prison.
